The Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) Generalist is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This position serves as an advance technician for outpatient care settings such as; primary care, mental health, and specialty clinics. As an ICT Generalist the incumbent may serve in a medical center, community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC), mobile medical unit or may have virtual/remote assignments.
Duties
Major Duties include, but not limited to:
Performs observation-based screening and collection of patient information in collaboration with licensed personnel.
Assists licensed personnel with the delivery of care to patients with complex and specialized care needs.
Complete approved templates and tools, such as normal result notes and follow up treatment protocols established by the agency.
Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations in an outpatient setting.
Assists licensed staff with preparing patients for medical evaluation, setting up equipment, passing instruments and providing treatment during in-person or virtual visits.
Operates specialized medical equipment to obtain diagnostic and therapeutic outcomes.
Collecting a wide range of specimens and preparing them for transfer to processing.

Individual Occupational Requirements (IOR): Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Obtains patient's experience through patient health history, chief complaints, medication history, and identification of health related conditions that may impact the patient's health status. Evaluates patients for emergent/non-emergent medical conditions. Orders appropriate diagnostic studies (i.e. vital signs, EKG, etc.). Performs interventions based upon patient symptoms and established protocols/standards. Assists in behavioral/psychiatric situations. Assists Emergency Department Physicians with complex, specialized, and potentially-life threatening procedures. Administers Oxygen, Basic IV fluids, nebulized medications, limited PO meds, IM meds/immunizations/vaccines. Recognizes life threatening situations and acts to correct them according to established national or facility protocols.
Note: Evidence of specialized experience must be supported by detailed documentation of duties performed in positions held on your resume. You must provide work experience information such as hours per week, salary, and starting/ending dates of employment (month and year format) to establish you have one (1) full year of Specialized Experience at or comparable to the required grade level.

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-07 level. Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-07 level. Possess graduate level education or an internship that meets the specialized experience required above GS-6, only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the Health Technician position. Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-07 level. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-06. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position A transcript must be submitted with your application if you are basing all or part of your qualifications on education.
Preferred Qualification: ICTs are advanced Health Technicians who have graduated from intensive specialized military medical training programs and served as combat medics, medical technicians, and corpsman. They possess fundamental knowledge, background and experience in emergency medicine, critical care, medical readiness, field medicine, bedside care, and primary care. Veterans, transitioning servicemembers, National Guard, and Reserve military Corpsmen, Combat Medics, and Medical Technicians interested in Intermediate Care Technician (ICT) positions.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
