About the Position: Serve as a Public Safety Dispatcher with Fort Drum Directorate of Emergency Services, providing emergency police, fire, and medical services to the public by answering emergency 911 calls and dispatching appropriate personnel and equipment.

Duties

Determine, based on local policy and procedure, appropriate jurisdiction and emergency services to be rendered. Provide emergency medical dispatching assistance to callers with medical emergencies using emergency medical dispatch system. Utilize computer keyboard to acknowledge or defer alarms, determine the priority level of each alarm generated, determine the operational procedures for the alarm and act in accordance with procedures. Interrogate callers to determine the problem and the nature of the call and simultaneously inputs pertinent information, as information is received, into the Computer Aided Dispatching (CAD) system. Receive and evaluate of 911 emergency calls, to include installation fire, police, ambulance service, and Commercial Intrusion Detection System alarms. Perform crisis intervention with distraught emergency callers during high-risk situations. Initiate an immediate, appropriate, emergency response and provide the caller with advanced life support. Refer non-emergency callers to appropriate department/agency for assistance.

Requirements

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • In accordance with Army Regulation 690-85, this is a Testing Designated position; the incumbent is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Position is subject to shift work. The incumbent is required to work an alternate work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays).
  • The incumbent is required to wear a uniform.
  • Incumbent is required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions, Terrorist Force Protection Condition (TFPCON) or installation closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
  • Must be able to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state issued driver's license.
  • TDY 5% is required.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting with receiving and assessing 911 emergency calls to dispatch appropriate assistance (e.g., police, fire or medical services); 2) providing instructions to 911 callers in high stress conditions; and 3) utilizing dispatching and/or law enforcement communication equipment/systems to perform dispatching duties. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the Federal service (GS-05).
