Duties

Joining Customs & Border Protection will allow you to use your expertise in qualitative system and management support principles processes and systems to support major missions. This position starts at a salary of $94,199.00 (GS-12, Step 1) to $145,617.00 (GS-13, Step 10) with promotion potential to $145,617.00 (GS-13 Step 10). In this Special Assistant position, you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals to providing direct, confidential support and advice to leadership. Typical work assignments include: Serving as the principal administrative point of contact for the executive senior leaders within an organization, providing a variety of administrative guidance and support requiring knowledge and analysis of a variety of areas Managing the executive senior leaders calendars, scheduling interviews, travel arrangements, meetings, and conferences attended by the executive senior leaders, which routinely occur with other high-ranking officials within CBP, DHS, and other Federal agencies Responsible for answering sensitive and complex, inquires, comments, and complaints, which involve issues pertaining to CBP programs and policies Identifying and implementing efficiency improvements by analyzing, streamlining, and automating cumbersome or time-consuming manual administrative processes Providing a variety of administrative support requiring analysis of a variety of areas, to include assistance with office-wide programs administered by OIT, such as the Awards Programs, employee engagement and internal communications initiatives

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for the GS-12 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Advising and recommending active approaches for avoiding and/or resolving problems and reducing conflicts Assisting in coordinating and preparing memoranda, talking points, briefing materials, reports, spreadsheets, charts, and other documentation ensuring correct formatting, grammar, and punctuation Utilizing a variety of office automations and automated data processing systems and software programs to successfully accomplish duties Planning and/or assisting special projects and other varied functions that will require extensive research and analysis Prioritizing, assigning, and adjudicating incoming inquiries and requests for information, and tracking through completion Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Researching, evaluating, prioritizing, and recommending solutions for critical issues requiring action by senior staff within the office Managing and monitoring projects and assignments relating to program operations Coordinating, creating, and tracking the travel arrangements of senior executive leadership Prioritizes, assigns, and adjudicates incoming inquiries and requests for information, and tracking through completion NOTE: Your resume must explicitly indicate how you meet this requirement, otherwise you will be found ineligible. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 10/30/2023. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than two of the last five years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency waiver by meeting one or more of the following conditions: Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military A dependent who was authorized to accompany a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. government Participation in a study abroad program sponsored by a U.S. affiliated college or university Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period. Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) Eligibles: If you have never worked for the federal government, you are not CTAP/ICTAP eligible.
