Duties
Work schedule: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (Monday through Friday)
Compressed/Flexible Schedule: may be determined by Supervisor

Function: 70% Clinical and 30% Administrative duties
Admin Duties:
(1) Advises and clinically supervises the physicians and mid-level providers (nurse practitioners, physician assistants)
(2) Will have up to 30% of time designated to carry out administrative functions and responsibilities.
(3) Actively participates in VANIHCS committees and/or teams, as assigned by the
Chief (ACOS) of Acute Medicine.
(4) Participates in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the
delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI)
(5) Coordinates and supervises quality assurance activities of staff. Formulates training
plans for assigned employees including orientation of new employees. Participates
in in-service training to broaden employee skills. Recommends formal training
when the need is apparent and officially recommends employees for formal training
courses.
(6) Will be responsible for the timely preparation of the monthly schedule of specialty
care provider coverage for ER/UC.
(7) Ensures specialty care coverage for unexpected gaps or provider absences, including
the incumbent providing coverage, as available.
(8) Adheres to all information security and privacy measures set by VHA and the
Medical Center.
(9) Annually develops and evaluates professional and personal goals.
(10) Identifies individual professional learning needs and participates in formal programs,
workshops, seminars, conferences, as well as self-directed learning activities, completes facility wide mandatory education yearly.
Clinical Duties:
(1) Provides quality patient-centered care to adults age 18-65 and older adults age 65+,
as assigned by ACOS of Acute Medicine.
(2) Assesses Veterans by utilizing advanced clinical judgment and physical assessment
skills. Identifies acute/non-acute/chronic health problems.
(3) Ensures that safe, efficient, and high quality healthcare is delivered within the
department.
(4) Ensures appropriate initial evaluation, treatment, and consultation, as well as
documentation, consistent with current VHA Directive and VHNIHCS policies on
Emergency Medicine.
(5) For admissions to the inpatient units, will ensure a physician-to-physician
conversation regarding the need for admission, including diagnoses, assessment and
recommendations.
(6) Demonstrate sound decision making skills, both clinical and administrative, which
bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory
role of physicians.
(7) Daily care of patients also entails regular interaction with nursing, coordination of
consultations and care and facilitation of diagnostic studies and therapeutic
procedures.
(8) Other vital roles include: communication with patients and their families, patient
education, discharge planning and communication with outpatient providers,
arranging follow up, preparing discharge instructions, medication reconciliation, and
ensuring communication during hand-offs of care.
(9) Ensures a sign-out to the oncoming physician to ensure an informed transition of
care; coordinate with the admitting physician and consultants to organize diagnostic
and treatment plans for all patients pending admission.
(10) Maintain appropriate clinical privileges in order to fulfill the duties of assignment
within designated specialty care services.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/30/2023.Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted,
OR
Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant
Licensure and Registration. Physicians must possess a current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Residency Training. Physicians must have completed residency training or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA Physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are:
Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA), in the list published for the year the residency was completed,
OR
Other residencies or their equivalents which the local Professional Standards Board determines to have provided an applicant with appropriate professional training.
English Language Proficiency. Physicians appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).
Additional Requirement: ACLS/BLS certified
Preferred Experience: Board Certification is preferred. Board eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Practice, however
Board Certification is strongly desired
Physical Requirements: This position requires a pre-employment physical. Requires lifting 15-44 pounds; pushing (approx. 2 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers and both hands; walking and standing from 3-5 hours and kneeling. Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously. Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4. Far visions correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other. Must have depth perception and ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing aid is permitted.
