THIS IS NOT A LAW ENFORCEMENT POSITION Open to the first 50 applicants or until 11/3/2023, whichever comes first. This position is a Park Ranger Visitor Services Specialist, GS-0025-7, working in Willows, California for the Sacramento National Wildlife Refuge Complex. This is a term position expected to last 13 months but may be extended up to a total of 4 years at management's discretion.

Duties

As a Park Ranger Visitor Services Specialist, your duties will include, but are not limited to, the following: Conduct formal public talks, presentations, and demonstrations and use associated audiovisual equipment. Work with a variety of organizations and partners on mutually beneficial projects and events that educate the public about relevant subjects. Assist with the development of public outreach materials such as public service announcements, newspaper announcements, and/or program and event flyers for the promotion of programming. Conduct various methods of publicizing events and programs utilizing traditional local media (radio, newspaper, etc.) and social media tools (internet, email, etc.). Research and develop environmental education programs for a variety of audiences. Conduct on- and off-site environmental education programs for a variety of audiences. Initiate or assist with development or revision of environmental education materials. Assist in recruiting and training candidates for a volunteer program for a natural resource organization. Assist in planning and recognizing volunteers through events, meetings, or awards. Educate visitors about refuge resources and their conservation practices and management. As a participant or volunteer, attend public events and activities that lead to stronger partnerships with the organization. Seek partners to assist with specific projects that provide mutual benefit to partners or that achieve mutual goals. Apply the goals of diversity in reaching out to groups that are not traditional partners of the organization. Develop text for interpretive materials, such as brochures, guidebooks, handouts, and exhibits in support of visitor services program. Work with digital images in Adobe Photoshop to prepare them for use in websites, Facebook, and publications. Post images and text on Facebook and website according to agency and refuge guidelines. Use a variety of word processing and/or desktop publishing software (such as Microsoft Word, Adobe InDesign, etc.) to create interpretive materials, such as newsletters, brochures, guidebooks, handouts, and exhibits in support of visitor services program.

Qualifications

Only experience and education obtained by 11/03/2023 will be considered. In order to qualify for this position, you must possess the Minimum Qualification. Minimum Qualification for this Park Ranger Visitor Services Specialist, GS-0025-7 position: Possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level. Specialized experience is described as administering day-to-day operations of a natural resource/recreation site; developing and presenting interpretive programs, such as orientation talks or environmental education programs; assisting with the creation or revision of interpretive materials, such as guidebooks or exhibits; and reviewing visitor use patterns and their effect on natural resources, OR Completion of one full academic year of graduate education related to the position. Major of study is in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. Note: Transcripts required. OR Completion of a four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of directly related course work (as described in B above) with Superior Academic Achievement (SAA). Superior Academic Achievement can be achieved 3 different ways: (1) Class standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision; (2) Grade Point Average - Applicants must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher based on 4 years of education and recorded on applicant's transcript, or 3.5 or higher based on the average required courses completed in the major field during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (3) Honor society membership. Note: Transcripts required. OR Possess an appropriate combination of GS-5 level specialized experience and graduate level education as described above that, when computed as percentages of their respective requirements, equals at least 100% when combined. Note: Transcripts required Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

PROOF OF EDUCATION: All applicants who are using education or a combination of education and experience to qualify must submit copies of official or unofficial transcripts which include grades, credit hours earned, major(s), grade point average or class ranking, institution name, and student name. If any required coursework is not easily recognizable on transcripts, or if you believe a portion of a particular course can be credited toward meeting an educational requirement, you must also provide a memorandum on letterhead from the institution's registrar, dean, or other appropriate official stating the percentage of the course that should be considered to meet the requirement and the equivalent number of units. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable; however, if you are selected for the position, you will be required to produce the original official transcripts.

PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) were taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education.
