This position is located at the Edward Hines Jr. VA Hospital, in Hines, Illinois - a Level 1a Complexity VHA Facility and is organizationally aligned under the Nursing Service Line, Operating Room Department. The primary purpose of this position is to aid with a varied range of supportive and direct care duties for the Operating Room in support of patient activities.
Duties

Some of the duties and responsibilities of this position include (but are not limited to):
Picking surgical supplies for case carts and restocking and verifying/checking expiration of surgical
supplies.
Obtaining and delivering to the operating rooms sterile and non-sterile items.
Providing escort services within the department through rotating tours of duty, to include escorting patients, moving stretchers from one location in the unit to another, and moving cleaned beds from PACU to the Pre- Op/holding area.
Picking up and delivers laboratory specimens, specimen containers and blood or blood products for transfusion.
Assisting Operating Room personnel in transporting limbs/body to the Pathology & Laboratory Department.
Delivering equipment (surgical carts), Reusable Medical Equipment (RME), surgical schedules, and positioners to nursing staff, to include picking supplies for the surgeries and pushing the surgery carts to the surgery rooms.
Adhering to safety procedures of the section including infection control, transport of biohazards, and oxygen tanks.
Assisting in training new Health Aids in the procedures of the section and orientation to the facility.
Performing other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00 am - 5:30 pm

Qualifications
In accordance with 38 U.S.C 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
In order to qualify for this position, applicants must possess at least one of the following minimum requirements:
GENERAL EXPERIENCE: Possess six months of general experience. General experience is any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. OR
EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: Successfully completed 1 year of education above the high school level with courses that included study in medical, health, or related fields. NOTE TO APPLICANTS: This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. One year of full-time undergraduate study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business or technical school. Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of walking, standing, with minor bending, lifting, and pushing. The incumbent transports equipment, specimens, and patients on stretchers. It involves lifting patients and their belongings. The incumbent assists nursing staff with placing patients on transport equipment.
