About the Position: This position is located in the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fire Protection and Prevention Division. This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date. Duties

Serves as fully trained member of a firefighting crew responding to emergencies involving fire, emergency medical services, hazardous material and other protection of life and property. As an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), performs as a member of a team responsible for on scene emergency medical treatment and care of victims of fire, sudden illness, or accidental injury. Performs fire prevention inspections of structures, facilities, airfields and areas of the installation. Responds to alarms, combats fire and hazardous situations requiring the full performance of firefighting tasks. Serves as the driver-operator of one or more types of fire fighting vehicles and operates all fire fighting vehicle auxiliary equipment. Maintains and decontaminates hazardous materials response equipment and supplies. Operates fire alarm communication center and maintains records, logs, and forms.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a Secret security clearance.
  • This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
  • An individual not currently occupying a GS-0081 primary/rigorous position is required to successfully complete a pre employment physical prior to being placed into this position.
  • Must be able to pass pre-appointment and subsequent periodic medical examinations IAW DoD 6055.05M to determine fitness for continued performance of the duties of the position.
  • Must successfully complete an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Must participate in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Must wear a uniform and appropriate safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • An appropriate, valid state and government driver's license is required as well as the appropriate Emergency Vehicle Operators certification to operate vehicles assigned to the Fire Protection and Prevention Division.
  • Must successfully complete an annual emergency vehicle operator’s course.
  • Occasional Travel required (not more than 5%).
  • This position is designated as a Mission Essential Position.
  • Individual will be required to work 72 hours per week (144 hours per pay period) which includes at least one 24-hour shift and may include working weekends and holidays.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Position title is Firefighter at grades GS-4, GS-5 and GS-6; the title for the GS-7 is Firefighter (Basic Life Support/Hazardous Materials Technician). Specialized Experience for the GS-4:One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; and (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03). OR Education: Two years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Training, Fire Science, or other related fields of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirement is at least 100%. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) Specialized Experience for GS-5: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; AND (4) operation of fire communications equipment. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04). OR Education: Four years of education above the high school level in an accredited college or university in Fire Science, Fire Training, or other related fields of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages. For GS-06 grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Specialized Experience for GS-7: Onwyear of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes: (1) Controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) Rescue operations; (3) Detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) Operation of fire communications equipment; (5) Controlling hazardous materials incidents; (6) Developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention; AND (7) providing emergency care and basic life support to patients. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For GS-07 grade level, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirements above, applicants must also possess: For Firefighter GS-5/6/7 grade levels - Firefighter I certification; Firefighter II certification; Airport Firefighter certification; Hazardous Materials Awareness certification; and Hazardous Materials Operations certification; certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.
