These are Permanent Career-Seasonal part time positions located at Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in the Interpretation Division and are subject to release and recall procedures. Duties

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately 6 months in pay status, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year. As communication professionals, interpreters are responsible for developing and presenting a variety of programs including guided walks, illustrated talks (PowerPoint amphitheater and walking tour programs) and demonstrations. Programs are developed using principles of the NPS thematic interpretation model necessitating thorough research, familiarity with and creative use of delivery techniques and a desire to strive for interpretive excellence. Interpretation rangers incorporate informal interpretation techniques while providing information and orientation services in visitor centers, ranger stations and while roving in the field. Interpretation rangers perform cashier duties and assist with a variety of special projects to support park goals. Rangers actively promote the safety of park visitors and stewardship of park resources in all interactions, and may also be the initial contact for accident reporting and emergency assistance. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather from snow, wind, and rain to sun and heat. Work involves standing for long periods of time, walking over rough and uneven terrain and living in close quarters with co-workers. Physical Demands: The work requires standing for long periods of time, walking for long distances, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending, and lifting moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of interpretive programs. Work Environment: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Area Information: Park Housing is NOT available. Hopewell Culture National Historical Park is located 2 miles north of the town of Chillicothe, Ohio on State Highway 104. Hopewell Culture NHP is 50 miles south of Columbus, Ohio. The park's location at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains has a moderate climate with seasonal weather. Summers are generally hot and humid with occasional thunderstorms. Daytime temperatures in the summer average between 80 to 90 degrees F. Winters are cold with occasional moderate accumulations of snow, generally less than six inches. Daytime temperatures in the winter average between 30 to 40 degrees F. Chillicothe (population 22,000) provides K-12 schools, a branch campus of Ohio University, a regional hospital, and a variety of stores, restaurants, motels, and banks. Recreational opportunities include hiking, biking, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, arts, music and more. Columbus provides all modern amenities, collegiate opportunities, and cultural features of a major metropolitan area.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-10/30/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: oral presentation of historical, scientific, or program information to groups; or developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; naturalist; environmental educator or teacher; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked fore each employment on your resume. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hour or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours in courses related to the occupation, such as American history, science, public speaking, parks and recreation, education or communications. You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating degree earned and credit hours in order to qualify based on education. A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. For example, I have 6 months of the specialized experience described in A above (50% of the experience requirement), and 3 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified in B above (50% of the related coursework required). You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts indicating degree earned and credit hours in order to qualify based on education. A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
