You will serve as an Electric Power Controller in the Public Works Department of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC.
Duties
You will operate and maintain diesel generators, uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), and the high voltage electrical utility system within the NSA compound.
You will install, modify, replace, troubleshoot, test, repair, and maintains high voltage distribution equipment and diesel generating equipment up to 34KVA.
You will perform preventive maintenance on high voltage and low voltage switch gear, transformers, circuit breakers, and associated equipment, and performs various tests such as oil dielectric and relay calibrations.
You will serve as operator in charge for the assigned shift.
You will respond to electrical emergencies and arrests the emergency using standard operating procedures (SOPs) as guidelines.
You will operate the electrical distribution system associated with the NH-94 generating plant, and NSA high voltage electrical distribution system.

- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States drivers license.

- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Must know how to operate power distribution systems characterized by a wide variety of uses, including industrial operations which have large load changes, reactive loads requiring control of the power factor, and some peak loads which require setting up parallel networks; 2) Possess the ability to interpret priority lists to plan load shedding schedules, interpret load requests in order to schedule blocks of power requested by users, balance capacitance and reactive loads to achieve a good power factor, and make maximum use of purchased power; 3) Be able to interpret operating instructions and distribution equipment operating criteria in order to determine the proper time to switch in other feeders, tie in parallel equipment, or adjust transformer taps to keep within the specified operating ranges of voltage and current or set up the system to handle heavy loads; 4) Aptitude in interpreting circuit diagrams and equipment layout drawings to determine which items such as circuit breakers and transformers can be operated and determine what rerouting can be done to provide power to undamaged portions of systems and what circuits they should open to allow others to make repairs safely; 5) Be able to receive work assignments from a supervisor or a higher grade operator either orally or in writing and use judgment in interpreting guidelines such as load shedding priority schedule, operating criteria of equipment, schematics, and wiring diagrams. They also be able to determine what problems to refer to a supervisor; 6) Must have a valid state driver's license and shall have the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 6 months of selection of this position in order to utilize certain types of heavy equipment that is necessary to support pipefitting related tasks.
