This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Mid Atlantic Health Care Network (VISN 6), Central Virginia VA Healthcare System in Richmond, VA.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: Collects and identifies disease carriers such as but not limited to, different types of mosquitoes, lice, fleas, scorpions, wasps, fire ants, poisonous snakes, raccoons, and bats; Interprets building plans and blueprints; Plans work sequences and conducts trouble-shooting inspections of buildings and grounds for evidence of conditions conducive to damage and infestation by insects, rodents, predatory animals, and other pests; Uses wrenches, pliers, screw drivers and similar hand tools to perform operator maintenance on application equipment; Utilizes suitable Integrated Pest Management control methods to reduce and control hazards to public health, stored products, structures, and vegetation; Selects, mixes, and applies restricted and general use pesticides to control a wide variety of insect, vertebrate, and plant pests including those not commonly recognized; Locates and identifies pests in stored products; Determines the appropriate pesticide toxicity, chemical solutions, baits, physical characteristics, lifecycles, and feeding habits associated with a wide variety of pests; and plans and carries out appropriate pest control measures; and Performs other duties as assigned Work Schedule: Sunday - Thursday 6:00am-2:00pm, but work shcedule is negotiable. Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work assignments require moderate to strenuous effort. The Pest Controller must climb, bend, stoop, crawl, and stand on concrete or metal surfaces; and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods; and frequently lift parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. The work is accomplished both inside and outside in all areas of a structure to include but not limited to under a building, attics space, mechanical and electrical rooms. When working outside, the Pest Controller is exposed to hot sun for extended periods of time and occasionally to bad weather. Inside work is often accomplished in structural areas with minimum ventilation and/or limited access. Some work is accomplished under buildings and within crawlspaces which have wet or dusty conditions with minimum ventilation and/or limited access. The Pest Controller mixes substances and applies pesticides while wearing respirators, gloves, and other personal protective equipment designed to nullify the risk of exposure to toxic dust and sprays which might damage his/her health. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications.
