This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), Chief Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) Office, New Orleans, L.A.
Duties
Coast Guard ALJs conduct formal proceedings in Merchant Mariner Credentialing suspension and revocation hearings to promote safety at sea. Also, they are responsible for conducting administrative hearings and issuing decisions for several different Federal departments and agencies, e.g., DHS, Transportation Security Administration, Customs and Border Protection, Merit Systems Protection Board, and Bureau of Industry and Security. You will serve as an attorney-advisor and provide assistance to an ALJ in a wide variety of administrative proceedings. Cases may involve important questions of public policy, have substantial impact on activities of the Coast Guard (CG), and the maritime industry.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- This position requires membership in the State Bar.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Unofficial J.D. or LL.B. transcript required at the time of application.
- This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).
- Telework is in accordance with agency policy and upon supervior's approval.
Qualifications
All Candidates must possess a J.D. or LL.B degree from an accredited law school;ANDMust be a member in good standing of the appropriate licensing authority of any state, territory of the United States, Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or District of Columbia bar.
AND
To qualify for the GS-11: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level.
To qualify for the GS-12: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level.
To qualify for the GS-13: You must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.
National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.
