The work is to help pharmacists dispense prescription medication to customers or health professionals with emphasizes on billing and Point-of-Sale (POS) duties. Processes billing claims on-line to health insurance carriers for cost of pharmaceuticals furnished to patients who are covered by health insurance policies. The position reports to a Supervisory Pharmacist.

Duties

Provides basic medical support for pharmacist lead clinics such as appointment scheduling, taking vitals including, height, weight and blood pressure, screens for allergies, immunization status, and identifies medication related problems. Participates and supports community events as needed. Assesses patients for medication compliance, assessing for duplication of therapy, medication preparation, review, supply functions, dispensing and control of medications and other pharmaceutical products that are supplied by the pharmacy service to the ambulatory patients, nursing staff and physicians. Performs the technical processes entailed in processing and dispensing medications to patients which includes basic review of the chart to determine appropriate patient and number of medications including quantities to be dispensed, formulary exclusion violations, appropriateness of provider prescribing privileges, accidental omission of medication orders. Monitors patient data in system to ensure accurate data and appropriate billing information. Identifies, researches, follows-up and resubmits rejected claims in order to ensure maximum reimbursement to the facility. Runs a variety of reports locating discrepancies in data input, determining the source of the error and taking necessary remedial action. Works with contacts at various Pharmacy Benefit Managers help desks to fix rejections within specified timeframes. Provides the Chief Pharmacist reports on payable claims, rejected claims, and paper claims on a daily, weekly, monthly basis or as needed. Manages the regular program of supply procurement and supply management. This includes assessment of need, preparing purchase orders and requests, placing computer generated or phone orders to prime vendor or wholesalers, receiving drugs into the pharmacy, taking periodic inventories of stock.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. Individual Occupational Requirements Specialized Experience For positions at GS-4 and above: Qualifying specialized experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories. Experience must have provided a basic knowledge of: Pharmaceutical nomenclature. Characteristics, strengths, and dosage forms of pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceutical systems of weights and measures; and the Variety of procedures and techniques involved in the care, storage, repackaging, bulk compounding, and distribution of pharmaceuticals. or Education and Training For GS-3: Successful completion of 1 year of study that included a course in biology, chemistry, or physics. For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study in pharmacy or pharmacy technology that included at least 12 semester hours in courses in the care, storage, distribution, and preparation of pharmaceuticals, and appropriate laboratory work. For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in pharmacy, or that included at least 24 semester hours in pharmacy-related courses. Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision is creditable on a month-for-month basis for general experience. Successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy practices while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of specialized experience required for GS-5. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS for GS-06 grade: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled is required. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. GS-05 is the next lower grade level to the GS-06 grade. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Filling prescriptions utilizing automated dispensing equipment; distributing pharmaceuticals; utilizing pharmacy based computer systems; working with insurance claims to bill for pharmaceuticals and resolve any billing issues; and performing pharmaceutical procurement and inventory management. SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS FOR GS-06 GRADE: A current and active certification through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board or National Health Career Association AND an active Pharmacy Technician License within any U.S. State or U.S. Territory. Selective factors represent knowledge, skills, or abilities that are essential for successful job performance and cannot reasonably be acquired on the job during the period of orientation/training customary for the position being filled. Note: Candidates who do not meet a selective placement factor are ineligible for further consideration. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Education

There are no education requirements for GS-06 grade level. Successfully completed post-high school education is qualifying for grades GS-3 through GS-5. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

NOTE: Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended.
