This position serves as the Industrial Equipment Maintenance Mechanic Work Leader for the South Texas Veterans Health Care System (STVHCS) under the general supervision of the Industrial Equipment Mechanic Forman in the Industrial Equipment Team Unit Shop in Maintenance and Operations Section

Duties

The incumbent is considered a working leader in charge of all work assigned to Industrial Equipment Team Unit. As such, he/she leads three (3) WG-5352-10 - Industrial Equipment Mechanic, and five (5) WG-4204-10 - Pipefitter and four (4) WG-4749-10 - Maintenance Mechanic. The incumbent leads the workers in the performance of their duties. The incumbent is responsible for preparing estimates and ordering of material for projects and regular maintenance work, laying out new work or repair work, and is required to work from blueprints and/or sketches. In performing the duties or leading subordinates in all work assigned, he must always observe national, local, and state codes. The position is responsible for assisting the Industrial Equipment Team Unit Shop Supervisor in the plans, layout, assigning, and coordination of work for the team on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. Input is provided to the supervisor on scheduled project work or longer-term plans. Assist the supervisor in establishing priorities and deadlines based on general work schedules, methods, policies, and code requirements. Coordinate projects and other work activities based on the instructions received from the supervisor. The incumbent will pass on to other workers the instructions received from supervisor and get work started, by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group. Work along with other workers and sets the pace. Demonstrate proper work methods. Ensure that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations. Ensure that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy. Check work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met. Urge or advise other workers to follow instructions received from supervisor, and to meet deadlines. Assure that safety and housekeeping rules are followed (for example, assuring that limits of safe machine operation are not exceeded and that all tools are used properly). The incumbent is subject to callback for any emergency condition that may occur outside of the regular tour of duty. The incumbent will report to supervisor on status and progress of work and causes of work delays; and answering questions of supervisors on overall work operations and problems (for example, concerning, additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees). Incumbent assigns work to the unit force daily, prepare schedules for special projects, and submit them in advance to the Industrial Equipment Team Unit Shop Supervisor; and Maintenance & Operations Supervisor as required. The incumbent will inform the supervisor of the need to redirect resources, beyond delegated limitations, to accommodate emergencies. Utilize automated computer software for day-to-day operations, such as but not limited to: Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, VISTA, VATAS, AMESIMERs, Maximo or other work order systems etc. The incumbent will assist the supervisor in preparation of estimates and the ordering of materials for construction, maintenance, repair, or improvements to systems and structures throughout the Medical Center and CBOCs. Assist the supervisor in the effective and economical use of allocated resources, both human and material. Update the shop Supervisor or higher supervisors regarding status and progress of work and causes of work delays. The incumbent assures that safety and housekeeping practices are followed. The incumbent is thoroughly familiar with all mechanical systems of the hospital and be capable of their repair, maintenance, alteration, or removal. When not leading, incumbent performs maintenance duties under this position and other duties as assigned. Physical Requirements: Work requires walking, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, kneeling, crawling and other awkward positions, sometimes in cramped quarters, on scaffolds, and ladders. Makes repairs on equipment or in installations often on high or hard to reach areas from ladders or platforms. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds and operates equipment. They must exercise normal care and practice all safety regulations during the performance of duties to prevent injury.
