Duties

As the Legal Assistant (Office Automation) with responsibility for serving as the Grand Jury Coordinator for the Fresno office, you will provide highly specialized technical advice on the laws, regulations and agency requirements of grand jury activities and case processing. You will also provide legal support to one or more Assistant United States Attorneys. Duties include (but are not limited to): Provides a wide range of direct legal support services for all grand jury matters and acts as technical advisor on grand jury matters. Serves as point of contact on grand jury investigations and procedures for attorneys, investigative agents, records custodians and court personnel. Participates in the impanelment process by giving an orientation speech and answering questions, preparing handouts and ID cards, collecting personal information from newly selected jurors, and training new foreperson and deputy foreperson. Reviews bills received from financial institutions for records provided pursuant to a grand jury subpoena. Arranges for qualified court reporters to record and transcribe grand jury proceedings and for interpreters as required. Provides a variety of direct legal support services to one or more Assistant United States Attorneys to include examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents, maintaining files and calendar of assigned active cases, searches legal reference files for information needed, arranges travel. Travel Required: Occasional travel required.

  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation

Qualifications

Note: In order to be considered "qualified" for this position, your specialized experience must be described in your resume. Please be sure that your resume clearly defines any and all of the specialized experience that you may have. If your specialized experience is not clearly detailed in your resume, you may not be considered for this position. The USAO cannot assume what duties were/are accomplished based on a job title. GS-8: To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level in Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience performing the following types of duties: providing information and assistance relating to grand jury investigations/matters scheduled for grand jury, and legal and administrative procedures to be followed; examines, prepares and processes a variety of technical legal documents; prepares legal actions such as indictments, criminal complaints, search warrants, applications, notices, affidavits, summonses, and grand jury subpoenas. To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Career Transition Assistance Plan (CTAP)-The CTAP provides eligible surplus and displaced competitive service employees in the Department of Justice with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
