This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Work Schedule: 8:00-4:30pm
Clinical Responsibilities: (80% of time is direct patient care)
1. Call Schedule: Call is shared with other psychiatrists and psychiatric providers. There are shared weekday and
weekend calls. The call ratio depends on the number of providers on staff.
2. Continuum of Care: Provides support to general outpatients, substance abuse outpatients, mental health intensive
case management patients, general residential patients, PTSD residential patients, sub-acute inpatients, inpatients with
substance abuse, Community Living Center (CLC) patients, acute medical patients, acute inpatients, and Emergency
Department (ED) patients.
3. Privileges: Psychiatry privileges will consist of admissions, discharges, diagnosis, work-ups, and ongoing/continuity of
care of Veterans (to include consultation for patients who suffer from various mental health disorders).
4. Workflow: Returning patients are generally seen for 30 minutes. New patients are scheduled for an hour in the
outpatient areas. Inpatient and Residential Care is determined by availability and the need of the patient.
5.The incumbent will function, as part of a psychiatric care Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) team
working with other physicians, physician extenders, nurses and/or other support staff.
6. Primary responsibilities may be outpatient, inpatient, residential, consultation, or a combination depending on the needs
of the service line.
7. The incumbent provides high quality and efficient care and is able to work well in an interdisciplinary team setting.
8.. The incumbent may be required to see patient(s) one-on-one in a private office, in a residential setting, in an inpatient
setting, through tele/virtual visits, through VVC visits, or in the Emergency Department setting.
9. The incumbent complies with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screenings and
completion of clinical reminders for all patients.
10. The incumbent complies with all CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness standards for documentation
and proper patient check out procedures (e.g., entering diagnostic and procedure codes).
11. The incumbent ensures that the practice of psychiatric medicine is consistent with TJC, CARF, HIPPA, VA policies
and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, and
mandatory continuing education.
12. The incumbent may serve as a mental health team leader with responsibilities for coordinating consults and triage of
specialty clinic referrals.
Administrative Responsibilities: (15% of time)
1. The incumbent assists the Chief of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Health Service Line Manager in the design,
development, and implementation of clinical programs for the BHIP.
2. The incumbent adheres to operational policies and procedures established by the Chief of Psychiatry, the Behavioral
Health Service Line Manager, and the Medical Center.
3. The incumbent serves on Medical Center or healthcare system committees or task forces, on VISN committees or task
forces, and/or on National VA committees or task forces.
4. The incumbent participates in Behavioral Health Service Line supervisory and facility related quality metrics,
performance goals, strategic planning, daily huddles, and ad hoc projects (e.g. SAIL, system redesign, bookability,
productivity, VISN assigned goals, etc.).
5. The incumbent attends regular staff meetings, medical staff meetings, and Behavioral Health Service Line staff
meetings. The incumbent is committed to continuing education goals and requirements.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
[(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements:
The incumbent must be in overall good health, able to sit at a desk working at a computer, engage in light to moderate physical activity including sitting, walking, bending, and carrying supplies. The incumbent must be able to perform primarily light and sedentary duties with occasional moderate or heavy physical demands, to exercise patience, and to control emotions, with reasonable accommodation if necessary, without endangering the health and safety of themselves or others.
The position requires walking throughout the clinic, and the Medical Center, standing for extended periods of time, and involves sitting at a computer and in counsel and consultation with patients and interdisciplinary teams. This position also requires close visual acuity to perform an activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; and repetitive motions of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
The position may require heavy lifting (45 lbs. and over); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; walking (3 hours per day); standing (6 hours per day); kneeling (2 hours per day); both legs required; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16"; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted).
Education
Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
- Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
- Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
- For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
