Duties
SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The purpose of the Child and Youth Program (CYP) Food Service Worker position is to assist in the daily preparation and serving of nutritionally balanced meals and snacks. Selects and places food items on food trays according to a regular or modified menu, or individual diet. Identifies obvious discrepancies between the prescribed diets and the food items on the trays. Sets up work area with the correct supplies and food items, and breaks down and cleans the area after the serving period. Delivers trays to participants Provides assistance to cooks in the food preparation area by weighing, measuring, and assembling ingredients according to standardized recipes.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE: Applies knowledge of special procedures in preparing and serving food. Skills to organize their work assignments in a logical sequence, execute tasks quickly and accurately, and meet strict meal schedules. Understands regular and modified diets. Memorizes the most frequently used modified diets to place food items and beverages on the participants tray. Understands food terminology, measurements, and serving information in standardized recipes and regular and modified menus. Applies knowledge of general sanitation principles to safeguard food against spoilage and waste. Knowledgeable of the temperature range where the potential of bacterial growth in food is greatest and the requirement to keep hot food in heated holding equipment or immediately refrigerate it. Has knowledge and skill to apportion food items according to approved portion control practices. Has a thorough understanding of the routine methods and procedures used in all functional areas of the food service operation.RESPONSIBILITY: Completes assignments individually or as part of a team under the general supervision of the immediate supervisor. Assignments are made either orally or in writing. Detailed instructions are provided only for special projects. The work involving modified diet tray assembly is usually performed as a team with the worker being expected to know the commonly used diets in order to place items on a tray. Work involving actual food preparation is accomplished under the guidance of a cook who provides technical instruction and checks work in progress and upon completion for conformance with acceptable food service practices. Food service workers know daily routines and work from guides such as diet cards, menus, portion control charts, standardized recipes, and employee assignment sheets. Questions on unusual or difficult tasks are referred to a higher grade worker or supervisor for clarification and advice. Work at this level is evaluated in terms of accuracy and timely completion of assignments.PHYSICAL EFFORT: Subject to continuous standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, pulling, and bending. Work involves moderate to heavy physical effort such as frequently lifting or moving objects and constant standing and walking. Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance.WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is performed in kitchen areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Food service workers are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.Satisfactorily complete all background checks in accordance with DoD and Marine Corps policy for employees who provide child care services. Must pass a pre-employment physical and annual physicals thereafter, provide evidence of immunization and be free from communicable disease. Must complete all DoD training requirements within the specified time including orientation, initial, and annual ongoing training requirements, and required certifications, if any. Must maintain current food handlers, CPR and First Aid certifications. May be required to obtain a government driver’s license. Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, and possess strong interpersonal communication skills. Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor.
