Technologists in this position perform the technical aspects of Complex Vascular Ultrasound Examinations and Complex General Sonography. The individual in this position will use specialized knowledge of cross-sectional anatomy and complex computer skills to complete their work tasks.
Duties
Advises radiologists or referring physician of significant abnormalities that would require their immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing examination.
Performs ultrasound examinations but not limited to the: neck, chest, abdomen, extremities, retroperitoneal space, and pelvis, for the purpose of acquiring high quality examinations that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical disorders.
Performs a variety of routine and complex vascular examinations such as extremity arterial and venous duplex to include arterial and venous patency with flow measurements and characteristics (using pulse and continuous wave Doppler techniques). Additional extremity exams may include hemodialysis graft evaluation, venous mapping, and venous insufficiency scans in accordance with established practice guidelines. Will also perform abdominal aorta, carotid-artery duplex exams for the purpose of acquiring high quality examinations that assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patient medical disorders.
Performs Ankle Brachial Index measurements (or ABIs).
Participates in the training of residents, medical students, and ultrasound technology students so that these individuals may acquire an understanding of the principles of ultrasound and how it relates to other diagnostic exams.
Performs training of technicians or technologists for any new Ultrasound or Vascular procedure.
Performs routine clerical procedures for the purpose of maintaining accurate ultrasound records so that easy recall of patient examinations may be achieved. This requires maintaining a diagnostic log, patient schedule log, and procedure log, editing and when necessary registering patients in the Radiology Information System (RIS)
Possesses a working knowledge of sterile technique in the performance of using ultrasound to guide invasive and diagnostic tissue sampling and fluid drainages.
Makes multiple simultaneous settings and adjustments in operation of equipment to insure accurate results. On the basis of radiologic findings, determines necessary ultrasonic procedures to yield definitive diagnostic findings.
Reviews new developments in the field and recommends to supervisor those that would improve the operation of the section.
Maintains adequate supplies so that examinations are not delayed due to the lack of necessary equipment and supplies.
Develops and maintains patient prep procedures so that patients and wards understand the proper preparations for ultrasound examinations in an effort to minimize delays of examinations. These preps are disseminated either by written preparation information or by telephone conversations.

Qualifications
BASIC REQUIREMENTS
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). (Copy of certification required)
Education: Completion of a full time training course of at least 24 months duration (or the equivalent) in a post high-school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from schools accredited by the ARRT and certification by the ARRT in radiology. In addition to the Basic Requirements Applicants must meet the Grade Determinates:
GS - 10 Grade Determinations
Experience - At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level which include: ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures, knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers, ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure, knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography, knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions, a knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSA's (knowledge, skills, and abilities):
Knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage, dose monitoring, and genetic changes.
Ability to utilize advanced imaging software that supports complex imaging programs and recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might result in increased exposures, and ability to recommend methods to prevent such exposures.
Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, to understand the operation of the equipment.
Knowledge and skill in positioning of patients for a wide variety of highly complex imaging (CT, MRI, IR, ultrasound, mammography) studies.]
Preferred Experience: Ability to perform Diagnostic X-ray, General Gynecology, and Vascular US Exams
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-10.
