Duties

Manage resource use by processing and inspecting locatable minerals projects. Manage resource use by processing and inspecting salable mineral projects. Manage resource use by providing geologic expertise in applications to drill and oil and gas sundry processing. Reviews geologic data and logging procedures to evaluate formation depths, target depths, and protection of natural geologic resources.

No assumptions will be made about your experience. THIS POSITION HAS A POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENT. YOU MUST MEET ONE OF THE TWO LISTED BELOW IN THE EDUCATION FIELD. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. FOR GS-09: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess either 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree, OR one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: The geologist must have professional knowledge of the principles, theories, practices and science of geology and minerals management. They must show demonstrated knowledge of mineral methodologies related to conducting inventories and mineral evaluations, and the knowledge of geologic mode of occurrences of specific mineral commodities. The employee must have knowledge of established mineral extraction technologies such as mining methods for surface and underground mineral developments and petroleum and geothermal resources, recovery techniques, and the demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to actual work situations. NOTE: Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable. FOR GS-11: In addition to meeting the education requirement, you must possess either 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, OR one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: The geologist must possess in-depth professional knowledge of the principles, theories, practices and science of geology and minerals management sufficient to allow the person in this position to accomplish complex and extensive work assignments. They must show demonstrated knowledge of mineral methodologies related to conducting inventories and mineral evaluations, and the knowledge of geologic mode of occurrences of specific mineral commodities. The employee must have knowledge of established mineral extraction technologies such as mining methods for surface and underground mineral developments and petroleum and geothermal resources, recovery techniques, and the demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to actual work situations. The geologist must have knowledge of the 1872 Mining Law, the 1920 Mineral Leasing Act, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act and other specific mineral laws along with their implementing regulations and court interpretations is imperative. NOTE: Education and experience may be combined for all grade levels for which both education and experience are acceptable. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work is primarily sedentary. However, there may be some physical exertion such as walking; hiking; standing; bending; carrying of items such as books and backpacks; driving an automobile or off-highway vehicle; operating a small boat, etc. Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office. Occasional travel may be required. The position may be required to visit field sites where risks may include exposure to inclement weather and potential injury from falls, strains, bites, stings, etc. The incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or designated by the Safety Officer.

Education

THIS POSITION HAS A POSITIVE EDUCATION REQUIREMENT. YOU MUST MEET ONE OF THE TWO BELOW:Basic Requirements:
  1. Degree: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

  2. Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
