This position is located within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Police Service (PS). The mission of the PS is to serve and protect Veterans, patients, employees, contractors, volunteers, affiliates, visitors, and others who frequent VA facilities. Duties
Duties of the Supervisory Police Officer include, but are not limited to:
Supervises a team of police and other law enforcement staff at varying levels of responsibility.
Establishes priorities to coordinate, plan, organize and complete work in accordance with sound time-management methodology.
Monitors and reviews status/progress of work and makes adjustments to ensure the workload is balanced.
Revises work schedules to meet changes in workload considering factors such as peak loads, availability of manpower and processing time requirements.
Empathizes, engages, and communicates with all individuals encountered to ensure a positive and safe environment.
Plans work schedules and sequence of operations daily to assure an even flow and distribution of work and meeting schedules and deadlines.
Prepares performance standards and performs staff performance evaluation.
Receives and resolves formal and/or complex complaints of employees.
Identifies the development and training needs for police staff supervised.
Develops, implements and makes revision recommendations to departmental policies and procedures.
Makes independent decisions to take/direct/coordinate immediate steps to preserve life and property.
Takes disciplinary action as deemed necessary and/or proposes to higher authority specific disciplinary action consistent with the problem and facts.
Analyzes, interprets and makes deductions from varying facts/circumstances.
Investigates incidents and takes steps to mitigate further risk and resolve situations.
Work Schedule: 7:30am - 4:00pm - 8:00am - 4:30pm Monday - Friday, Various shifts, that will include weekends and holidays.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/02/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-08. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:
Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-8 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Enforcing appropriate Federal, State, and local criminal codes in the protection of human life, public property, and the civil rights of all individuals, including the preservation of a peaceful environment; planning, directing, and supervising the work of subordinates; advising on procedures, standards, and responses to address law enforcement and security requirements; determining resource needs and allocating resources in response to patrol and security weaknesses; and following applicable regulations and instructions regarding documentation and investigations. Helping others learn through formal or informal methods; identifies training needs; provides constructive feedback; coaches others on how to perform tasks; acts as a mentor. Conducts and supervises active patrolling to ensure the safety of Veterans, Staff, Visitors. Conducts investigations, detains and arrests persons suspected of committing criminal acts Provides excellent customer service while protecting life and property.
Investigation of Fitness - A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment. The purpose of such an investigation is to secure evidence of the candidate's honesty, integrity, general character, and loyalty to the U.S. Government. Such investigations will be conducted under the security requirements of the hiring agency.
Drivers License - Applicant must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that they are medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely.
Medical Requirements - The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature. The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear the conversational voice. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as running, frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. It requires stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and the strength to pursue, apprehend or detain persons who are often uncooperative, assaultive, and/or armed.
