About the Position: Performs and coordinates complex duties associated with the writing, editing, layout, and publication of documents relating to science and engineering studies and programs carried out as part of the mission of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District (NWK).

Duties

Works as integral part of engineering and construction project delivery teams to create original content for large and/or highly complex documents or multimedia presentations. Provides advice and guidance as required to all technical, administrative, and management personnel on all matters related to writing, document preparation, publishing, and technology transfer. Perform writing, editing, review, and pre-press publishing tasks required for the preparation of technical reports, journal articles, conference papers, etc., and support documents pertaining to studies and programs related to the national defense.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.

GS-11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assisting in gathering information for senior technical writers, 2) Drafting articles for review by senior technical writers, AND 3) Applying engineering or scientific knowledge to products in a pre-publication state. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. GS-12 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Reviewing articles drafted by peers for technical accuracy, 2) Coordinating with other subject-matter experts on the technical (engineering or scientific) input of articles, AND 3) Provide input on publication styles/formats (such as: publication design, typography, organizational formats, mechanical style, and literary style). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Engineering and TechnologyTechnical CompetenceWriting Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.
