The Ann Arbor VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Supervisory Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist. The Supervisory Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist will function in Radiation Oncology Service.

Duties

The Supervisory Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist is a registered Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist with major duties including: As Supervisory Radiation Therapist for the Radiation Oncology Service, the incumbent has significant and highly diverse responsibilities. In this capacity he/she provides administrative support and staff assistance to the Chief and to the Medical Physicists. The incumbent oversees all daily service operations on the technical side, supervises the radiation therapists, coordinates service performance improvement activities, and provides direct clinical care as a radiation therapist. He/she is familiar with the clinical processes involved in the practice of radiation oncology including patient consultation, simulation, treatment planning, treatment delivery, and follow-up care. He/she is knowledgeable about the various forms of radiation used in the treatment of benign and malignant disease including external beam delivery and treatment with radioactive sources. He/she is knowledgeable about the use of hazardous materials used in the handling and fabrication of special moulds, cutouts and blocks. He/she is skilled in the operation of highly complex and technical equipment including linacs; simulators, conventional and CT based; and the use of record and verify systems. He/she is familiar with electronic portal imaging and the use of 3D conformal and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) as treatment delivery approaches. The incumbent carries out his/her assigned tasks with minimal supervisory controls and functions as the Chief Radiation Therapist on the treatment/planning unit. He/she has a thorough knowledge of radioactive materials and the use of radiation in the therapeutic setting. This includes familiarity with radiation safety principles and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) rules and regulations. He/she is able to provide technical oversight and maximize resources; including personnel to be sure tasks are assigned and accomplished in a manner that provides the optimal level of patient care within the workday. He/she confers with the radiation oncologist to determine the optimal simulation procedure to facilitate treatment planning. The incumbent functions as a supervisory radiation therapist with full administrative and professional responsibility for planning and directing the work of the RT (T)s in the medical center's radiation oncology department. He/she develops and updates technical policy and procedure manuals; implements department and medical center guidelines and policies and maintains timely records of equipment downtime and its problems; competency files on the technical staff, current technical protocols, radiation safety, and quality management for a tele-imaging network. He/she ensures all staff are compliant with accrediting and regulating bodies, adjusts staffing levels or work procedures to accommodate resource allocation decisions made at the executive level, and provides for the budgeting and financial management of the radiation oncology service. The incumbent will be responsible for hiring and training new therapy staff. KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION - The incumbent must demonstrate a thorough understanding of human cross-sectional anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology and medical terminology. - The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to accurately and safely operate a CT Simulator. - The incumbent must demonstrate ability to provide contrast material / usage. - The incumbent must demonstrate principles of digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) and transferring electronic media. - The incumbent must demonstrate knowledgeable of the MU calc program for use with emergency patients. - The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge of radiation oncology billing and coding. - The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to accurately and safely operate a Linear Accelerator and MRI Linear Accelerator. - The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to accurately and safely position patients for treatment ensuring radiation is delivered accurately and safely to patients in accordance to their treatment and National Radiation Safety Guidelines Requirements. - The incumbent must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the National Radiation Safety Guidelines and Requirements. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States (U.S.). Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified candidates in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7407(a). Education: Individuals must have successfully completed a program in therapeutic radiologic technology, evidenced by a certificate or an associate's or higher degree accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology or other accrediting bodies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (ED) and the subsequent completion of a 12-month ED accrediting body-approved program in therapeutic radiologic technology. Public Law 97-35 requires that persons who administer radiologic procedures meet the credentialing standards in 42 C.F.R. Part 75. They must have successfully completed an educational program meeting or exceeding the standards described in that regulation and is accredited by an organization recognized by the ED, and be radiation therapists certified by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy (T). Certification: All applicants must be certified in therapeutic radiologic technology by the ARRT in Radiation Therapy (ARRT (T)). Loss of Certification. Once certified, a TRT who fails to maintain the required certification must be removed from the occupation, which may result in termination of employment. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, the candidate must possess the following experience: GS-11: Must possess one year of experience at the GS-11 level or equivalent as an ARRT Therapeutic Radiologic Technologist (TRT) providing services in specialized areas of therapeutic radiologic technology and/or general therapeutic radiologic technology services. Employees at this level are fully functional as an Advanced TRT and are able to carry out their assigned tasks independently. Applicants must also demonstrate the following experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level: -Ability to manage daily operations of the department to include supervising radiation therapy staff; coordinating staffing, workload and schedules; setting priorities; and delegating tasks and responsibilities. -Ability to ensure department compliance with the national program office, radiation accrediting agencies, hospital and outside governing body standards through the management of quality improvement programs and adherence to departmental policies and standard operating procedures. -Ability to supervise employees as evidenced by assessing qualifications and abilities of current and prospective employees; interviewing and selecting candidates; providing training and/or departmental orientation; overseeing technical operations; assessing employees for promotions; and reviewing competency and conducting performance appraisals. -Ability to provide technical oversight to lower level TRTs for the completion of tasks such as CT simulation, treatment delivery, Record and Verify System (or other similar treatment delivery systems), newly acquired equipment, devices and products within the service. -Ability to successfully communicate with the radiation oncology team and internal and external customers to manage the needs of patients and accomplish the mission. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: -Ability in managing daily operations of the department to include supervising radiation therapy staff; coordinating staffing, workload and schedules; setting priorities; and delegating tasks and responsibilities. -Ability to coordinate and develop the quality improvement program to include evaluating and implementing departmental policies and standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with the national program office, radiation accrediting agencies, hospital and other outside governing body standards. -Ability to perform administrative duties to include, but not limited to: reviewing qualifications and abilities of current and prospective employees; interviewing and selecting candidates; providing training and departmental orientation; overseeing technical operations; granting promotions; and reviewing competencies and conducting performance appraisals. -Ability to provide oversight to lower level TRTs with tasks such as CT simulation, treatment delivery, Record and Verify System (or other similar treatment delivery systems), newly acquired equipment, devices and other products within the service. -Ability to successfully communicate with the radiation oncology team, internal customers and external customers to manage the needs of patients and to accomplish the mission. -Ability to adhere to radiation safety practices which include identifying and investigating treatment variations; reporting incidents; participating in quality assurance; addressing required reports, tasks and action items; and completing other requests using research and systematic data collection. -Knowledge of budget allocations and using resources within the budget, procuring of day-to-day supplies, investigating new equipment options and planning for long-term replacement needs. Work requires long periods of standing and walking and some bending. Must be able to push, pull and lift over 40 pounds.
