About the Position: Serves as a Natural Resources Specialist (Ranger) at a large water resource development project with greater than ten thousand acres of land and water, or at several smaller projects that are collectively similar in size to a large Corps lake. Exercises a thorough knowledge of the Corps of Engineers Natural Resources Management Program.

Duties

Develops guidelines and standard operating procedures. Manages habitat and projects supporting fish and wildlife resources. Acts as chief advisor to the resource manager concerning natural resource conservation matters. Oversees the conservation, preservation restoration and use of all project natural and cultural resources. Oversees the project's shoreline management program, which includes permits for activities on public land surrounding the lake (including floating dock and mowing/underbrushing permits), and minor real estate licenses and easements. Serves as a natural resources management staff specialist at a large water resource development project. Consults with and advises other project team members regarding their role in the conservation of project natural resources. Manages projects and habitat supporting fish and wildlife resources. Monitors recreational facilities and resolves conflicts that may occur due to conflicting recreational uses.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires possession of a valid state driver’s license.
  • Must obtain a boating license within 12 months.
  • Park Ranger uniform required to be worn daily.
  • Regular and recurring field trips to perform on site examinations, inspections, and/or surveillance of on-going field operations.
  • Recurring walking, climbing over rough terrain, steep trails, and riding in motor boats.
  • Some associate risks with rugged topography, working on or near water, working with toxic materials, and moving machinery and/or equipment.
  • This position requires incumbent to obtain and maintain citation authority. As a citation officer you may work alone enforcing requirements of Title 36 CFR.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes at the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes planning and implementing programs to manage natural, cultural and physical resources; administration of a Shoreline Management Program and participating in natural resource management activities at a flood control project. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Natural Resource Management, Biological Sciences, or other related degree fields. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
