***Relocation and/or Recruitment Incentives may be authorized for highly qualified candidates.*** This position is a member of the Engineering Service and is responsible for planning, coordinating, directing working operations for the Maintenance and Operations section of the Engineering Service at the Birmingham VA Medical Center and Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) locations.

Duties

The Maintenance and Operations (M&O) Supervisor provides for the overall administrative management of the M&O Section of the Engineering Service. The work directly involves or substantially impacts the provision of essential support operations to numerous, varied and complex technical, professional, and administrative functions. Work is performed on a broad scope that requires application of engineering principles in a highly complex medical center. The incumbent also has responsibility for managing maintenance activities at associated VA Outpatient Clinics. The employee researches and/or analyzes complex problems, issues, or program requirements related to all facets of engineering and provides expert analysis and advice. The M&O Supervisor must research and provide technical recommendations pertaining to a wide range of national codes and standards (NFPA, OSHA, JCAHO, etc.). EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The position requires walking, standing, bending, sitting, crawling and climbing. Incumbent must have good vision (with or without glasses). May be required to lift or carry tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds and may occasionally lift and carry items over 50 pounds. The incumbent may work from ladders, scaffolding, and/or hydraulic platforms. The position requires working in uncontrolled environments, in inclement weather conditions, and in confined or uncomfortable spaces. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. Occasionally the incumbent may be subject to possible dangerous working conditions including exposure to hazards normally encountered in the hospital trades and various types of infections. May be subject to electrical shock and/or electrical burns, cuts, bruises, and strains. Required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner.
