This professional position is located in the Washington National Office. Serves as a geologist with responsibility for planning, administering and providing expertise in the minerals and geology program on a national level.
Duties
Independently plans and carries out difficult geological studies and investigations.
Oversees the conduct of field investigations.
Serves as geological advisor on extensive and accelerated construction projects for mineral extraction activities on National Forest System lands. Interprets geological data and reviews data prepared by independent contractors.
Analyzes geological data of borrow sites and makes recommendations on suitability of material.
Plans and directs the implementation of the functional technical responsibilities necessary to carry out broad project assignments involving difficult or critical problems.
Provides technical oversight to Regional or inter-agency taskforces aimed at improving methods or tools addressing complex and unprecedented mining related issues on proposed and ongoing mineral extraction operations.
Requirements

Basic Requirement:
GS1350:
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in: geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.
Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-13: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as a majority of the following: conducting studies involving a variety of geological problems and processing Notices of Intent and Plans of Operations; participating with management in the development of natural resource management plans and programs, including policy formulation, definition of immediate and long-range objectives, and the establishment of priorities; and/or serving as a consultant and advisor for a range of complex problems in a minerals and geology program, including the interrelationships of management activities on forest resources.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
