The incumbent in this position will operate at the Engineering Service within the Greater Los Angeles, CA (GLA) VA Health Care System. The selectee will serve as a Motor Vehicle Operator (MVO), ensuring that the large fleet of VA owned and GSA leased vehicles are maintained properly and safe for patient transport.
Duties
Perform driving duties and related services operating various types and classes of motor vehicles including buses, trucks, vans, patient transport vehicles such as ambulances and wheelchair buses, passenger and shuttle vans.
Transports a variety of vehicles to various locations across the 5 counties that GLA serves.
Operate vehicles around sharp corners, narrow streets and roadways, and in heavy traffic and inclement weather conditions.
Provide preventive maintenance checks and services for all vehicles operated for the GLA Fleet.
Dispatches vehicles to approved employees for patient care activities and ensures required trip documentation is submitted upon vehicle return.
Provide the customer with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
Handle conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
Transport patients and employees for specified events to support healthcare operations.
Operate vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or 26,000-32,000 pounds with air brakes and/or special purpose accessory equipment, and gasoline, diesel, and electric powered vehicles to haul cargo and fuel, transport passengers, and tow or recover equipment.
Drive a variety of vehicles including passenger buses, passenger and cargo vans, laundry trucks, construction/heavy equipment for material handling, refrigerated food delivery trucks, passenger sedans, and transports passengers for events that support healthcare operations.
Work Schedule: 6:30am-3:00 pm, or may vary depending on service needs

Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Moderate physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects weighing (or requiring the force of) 25 to 50 pounds or more. The MVO adheres to safe, ergonomic work practices. The MVO shall wear appropriate personal protective equipment including weight belts, utilize proper loading equipment, and employ recommended lifting techniques to prevent injury and/or damage to property, including bending at knees to lift, pushing (not pulling) carts or other equipment, and follow all established safety standards.
