As a member of the System Architecture and Analytical Studies Branch you will conduct analysis and assessment of advanced communications for space and aeronautical applications. Work includes determining system design concepts, concepts of operations, high level requirements, modeling, simulation, and experimentation of proposed systems with the goal of optimizing the next generation aerospace communications networks and architectures.

Duties

Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee. Conduct analysis, design, modeling, and simulation of communications components (e.g., antennas, RF circuits), subsystems (e.g., frequency converters, RF front ends, signal processing), and full systems/architectures using computer modeling software. Identify, design, develop, and validate new architecture, components, systems, and sub-systems for integration into aeronautics and space applications. Validation can include analytical, test, and/or measurement approaches. Develop prototype space and aeronautical system/architecture emulations and demonstrations in a laboratory or relevant environment. Develop and disseminate new knowledge through research and development in areas of satellite communications and systems, RF and optical communication systems, measurement techniques, link analysis, and digital modulation and coding. Document methods, results, and recommendations through internal and external reports, position papers, presentations, and publications. Report on accomplishments in the form of formal reviews, presentations, and hardware or software deliverables. Define concepts, develop, and assess requirements for future space exploration (e.g., Earth, Lunar and Mars) and new aeronautical systems within the National Airspace System (e.g. unpiloted autonomous air vehicles). Work independently and in teams to solve technical problems. May lead research or development task areas in support of larger projects. Develop new analytical capability and tools, technology products, subsystems, and systems for space and aeronautical applications.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work. NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement. To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level: Utilizing modeling, simulation or test/measurement tools on communications, navigation, or remote sensing components and systems in the space, aeronautical, or terrestrial radio communication environment; Applying engineering concepts, principles, and practices with emphasis in electrical engineering and communication theory (for example; signal processing concepts, time domain/frequency domain representation of signals and systems, antenna concepts, 5G/6G wireless concepts, or adaptive modulation and coding techniques); Participating in developing analyses and conducting mathematical or computer modeling techniques. To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level: Conducting modeling, simulation, or test/measurement on communications, navigation, or remote sensing components and systems in the space, aeronautical, or terrestrial radio communication environment; Performing electrical engineering and applying communication theory in one or more of the following areas: signal processing, time domain/frequency domain representation of signals and systems, antennas, signal propagation, WiFi standards (e.g. 5G/6G), or adaptive modulation and coding; Developing analytical capability and tools, technology products, subsystems, or systems for space and aeronautical applications. Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
