Duties

The radiologist may serve a dual role as a breast imager and interpreter of general diagnostic radiology examinations. The diagnostic radiologist provides a spectrum of image interpretation, image-guided procedures, and patient care services within the specialty of Diagnostic Radiology and possesses additional subspecialty expertise in Mammography/Breast Imaging. The LIP must meet the initial certification, Continuing Education Units (CEU) and continuing experience FDA regulations as indicated in the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) (Pub. L.102-539). The Breast Imager is responsible for working independently and in collaboration with the Mammography Lead Interpreting Physician (LIP), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), American College of Radiology (ACR), National Radiology Program (NRP), Mammography Program Manager, Chief of Therapeutics and Diagnostic Imaging, Interpreting Physicians and Mammography Technologists. The Breast Radiologist works closely with the Lead Mammography LIP, the Section Chief of Radiology, Chief of Therapeutics and Diagnostic Imaging, Interpreting Physicians, Biomedical Engineer, Mammography Technologist, Women's Health, and other administrative staff in roles that support these efforts. In addition to the clinical practice of diagnostic radiology, other duties include contributions to quality assurance and performance improvement, oversight of technical quality, education of staff and trainees, committee assignments and other activities that support clinical operations and the mission, values and goals of the VA and the Medical Center. Functions Specific to the Breast Radiologist position: The Breast Radiologist will work alongside the LIP for preparation of the facility's 3 year ACR Accreditation and annual FDA/MQSA inspection to include documentation and any corrective action plans. Assists the LIP in implementation of mammography Quality Assurance (QA) / Quality Improvement (QI) initiatives, including technical and professional guidelines and standards. Alongside the LIP, the Breast Radiologist must ensure that the quality assurance program, including personnel assignments, all equipment quality control tests, records, and corrective actions, the annual physicist's survey, and medical audit and outcomes analysis, meet the required standards 21 C.F.R. Part 900., as well as VHA policy. Participates in mammography imaging policies, procedures, best practices, and protocols. Maintains close association with professional organizations and provider groups in affiliated institutions, as well as other public and private organizations concerned with breast imaging. Leads and/or participates in various workgroups, committees, and advisory groups as assigned by the Atlanta VA's Section Chief of Radiology or Chief of Therapeutics and Diagnostic Imaging. Other duties as assigned by the Lead Mammography LIP, Atlanta VA's Section Chief of Radiology or Chief of Therapeutics and Diagnostic Imaging Oversight of quality and safety: Review exam requests for appropriateness. Prescribe exam protocols and modify as needed for specific clinical indications. Provide oversight of technical image quality with feedback to technologists. Provide clinical oversight of medication administration, including contrast, preps and other medications relevant to the Imaging Service. Provide oversight and serve as resource for radiation and MRI safety Provide oversight and serve as resource for infection control practices. Participate in various aspects of quality assurance such as peer review, protocol review, appropriateness criteria and performance improvement. Image Interpretation and Consultation: Interpret imaging exams including relevant exam comparison and correlation with clinical information in CPRS. Generate reports that contain pertinent findings and measurements, a description of normal and abnormal structures, discussion of differential diagnoses, recommendations and impression. Patient Care: Interact with patients to obtain relevant clinical history and physical exam findings within the scope of radiology practice, provide education to patients and support, obtain informed consent, issue disclosures when appropriate, document in CPRS, enter orders in CPRS, and other aspects of physician practice. Participate in the coordination of patient care: Contact clinical providers as relevant to assure effective patient care, discuss evaluation, management, follow-up and other aspects of coordinated, patient-centered care. Make timely and definitive notification of time-sensitive results and/or results that have major clinical significance. Integrate resources to provide current, optimal care: consult colleagues, research literature, maintain continuing education and other sources of current practice. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Physical requirements outlined below. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. Preferred Experience: Board Certified, Fellowship Training in Mammography or Women's Imaging, 2+ experience performing/interpreting mammography Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs); moderate carrying (15-44 lbs); straight pulling (1 hour); pushing (1 hour); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (5 hours); standing (4 hours); kneeling (1 hour); repeated bending (4 hours); both legs required; ability to perform rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" Jaeger 1 to 4; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; hearing (aid permitted); emotional/mental stability.
