This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Comp Service Position to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position is with USAJFK SPECIAL WARFARE CENTER & SCHOOL, FT BRAGG NC. Duties

Manufactures parts and complete items of equipment from raw stock of different kinds of metals and metal alloys and other materials, and performs machining work required to effect the fabrication, repair, or modification of firearm parts. Performs heat treating of metal when or as required. Performs non-standard metal forging, metal forming, and sheet metal fabrication requirements. Controls the torch or arc, and the positioning and feeding of the welding rod or electrode when welding manually. Performs welder requirements by applying a variety of electric resistance welding methods and equipment, or one or more manual welding processes. Performs non-standard machining work that requires the use of special adaptation or extension of the use of conventional machine tools.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Incumbent of this position is limited to persons who have not had a conviction of domestic violence under the Lautenberg Agreement to the Gun control Act of 1968 (18 U.S.C. 922).
  • Required to lift heavy equipment in excess of forty-five pounds.
  • A satisfactory medical examination is required prior to assignment into the position.
  • Required to wear protective equipment such as gloves, respirators, safety glasses, etc.
  • A drug test will be required.
  • A one year probation may be required.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Machinist (Armament) without more than normal supervision. Ability to perform common gunsmithing, firearm cycles of operation, firearm operating principles and theory of operation. I can 1) Operate and program a variety of machines and equipment (i.e., manual machines, Computer Numerical Control CNC machines, welding equipment, metal forging, metal forming, and sheet metal fabrication; and 2) Determine work methods and techniques to be used in the machining of parts, fixtures and assemblies for the repair, rebuild and overhaul of maintenance non-standard mission items such as non-standard small arm weapons systems and tooling. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Efforts - Frequently handles items weighing 15-25 pounds. Required to lift/carry items weighing up to 44 lbs. Mechanical lifting devices/other employees are available to assist with lift of 45 lbs and over. Work is performed in standing position with considerable stooping, reaching, bending. Working Conditions - Work is performed in multiple shops that are well illuminated, heated, and ventilated. Incumbent is exposed to vibration, excessive noise, fumes, hot metal, flying particles, abrasive particles, welding flashes, and dust. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is provided for incumbent as he/she is subject to cuts, bruises and burns, skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants and abrasive compounds. Safe shop practices are strictly enforced for there is danger to the fingers, hands and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating work pieces and moving parts of machines.
