This position, located at the Oklahoma City VA HCS, serves as Health Physicist (HP) for the Health Care System with Inpatient treatment, Outpatient clinics, Comprehensive Research and provides technical expertise for the Radiation Safety Program in with Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology, Research, Diagnostic Imaging, and all associated program elements

Duties

Major duties for this position include but are not limited to... Researches, interprets, analyzes, and applies Radiation Safety Unit guidelines, policies, regulations, etc. Serves as VAOKCHCS Laser Safety Officer, reviews laser safety assessments and coordinates laser safety policy Participates in establishing Unit policies and procedures; plans and schedules work in a manner that promotes a smooth flow and even distribution Coordinates plans and schedules with other Safety Service supervisor and Health Care System managers and supervisors Updates the Medical Center Radiation Safety Policy and Radiation Safety manual; serves as Facilitator of the Radiation Safety Committee and coordinates committee minutes Acts independently as the Approving Official in the ordering of radioactive materials by other services to ensure that the Permit possession limit is not exceeded, to ensure the facility is in full compliance with NRC and NHPP requirements, and to ensure ordering meets other requirements specific to the Radiation Safety Program Oversees compliance with the regulations governing the receipt, inspection, monitoring and recording of incoming shipments of radioactive materials Maintains records of radioisotope inventory and waste disposal to assure compliance with the Permit possession limits, provides signs and notices required by the NHPP and NRC to individual users as needed, and instructs individual users in the establishment and maintenance of their records Conducts periodic inspections of services and facilities; provides evaluation reports and records submitted by users to the Office Evaluates the background and experience with radioisotopes by prospective users and makes recommendations to the RSO regarding such qualifications The HP also in involved by preparing written documents, reports, and communications Independently analyzes and prepares personnel radiation exposure records (Dosimetry reports, urine assays and thyroid counts); notifies individuals and their supervisors of exposures approaching specified levels and recommend remedial measures Develops methods to assure compliance in the personnel monitoring program; executes a study to evaluate trends in personnel radiation exposure and will adapt methods to the exposure trends to cause exposures to be reduced to As Low as Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) levels Ensures proper and timely calibration of all survey instruments and dose calibrators; provides advice for the calibration of other types of counting equipment, performs and records the results of leak-tests for sealed sources listed on the institution radioisotope Permit; participates in the storing of radioactive materials, and is involved in the radioactive waste disposal program servicing the entire center Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-4:00pm Position Description Title/PD#: Health Physicist~/635-14220-O Physical Requirements: Required to perform considerable walking, standing, bending, and lifting, in all areas of the Medical Center; required to drive a VA vehicle, operate computer equipment, speak and listen well, and to have good vision; works in an adequately lighted and ventilated office environment regularly, in an outdoor environment occasionally, in a storage room/warehouse environment regularly, in a clinical environment regularly, in a laboratory regularly, and at remote locations occasionally. observes all safety precautions relating to each working environment, including compliance with the use of Personal Protective Equipment requirements and is required to perform considerable walking, standing, bending, and lifting, in all areas of the Medical Center

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR): This job series has the following Individual Occupational Requirement: A. Degree: Natural Science or Engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in Health Physics, Engineering, Radiological Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Mathematics, and/or Calculus. OR.... B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses as shown in paragraph A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a Health Physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to Health Physics comparable to that described in paragraph A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes...expert and comprehensive radiation safety and Laser oversight for the facility; independently provides technical support and expertise to the Radiation Safety Program and Health Care System staff at the Oklahoma City facilities, and any other facility that uses ionizing radiation in the form of radioactive materials or radiation producing machines; the ability to comprehend the impact the continued provision of research, radiology, nuclear medicine, radiation oncology and any other service using lasers, radiation producing devices or radioactive materials; and possess the knowledge and ability to assume the role as the main point of contact in handling the interrelated, emerging, complex, and frequent conflicting nature of Federal, state, and local laws and regulations that govern the management of natural resources and the environment There is no educational substitution for the GS-13 level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
