The incumbent provides all installations, repairs, and preventative maintenance actions on all electrical, data and communication systems within the Cincinnati VA Medical Center, research facility and 12 offsite locations located in the surrounding communities. Incumbent is assigned a wide variety of duties including the installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance and testing of electrical systems, vertical lifts, HVAC, boilers, data, and communication systems.

Duties

The Cincinnati VA Medical Center is a two-division campus located in Cincinnati, Ohio and Fort Thomas, Kentucky serving 15 counties in Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeast Indiana with 6 Community Based Outpatient Clinics located in Bellevue, KY; Florence, KY; Lawrenceburg, IN; Hamilton, OH; Clermont County, OH, and Georgetown, OH. Cincinnati VAMC also supports two off main campus locations in the Cincinnati area via an Eye Center and Mental Health Outreach Community Division. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Electrical Installation, Maintenance and Repair Incumbent maintains, installs, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, loads, and tests: emergency generator systems, new and existing electrical circuits, electrical distribution systems, fixtures, variable frequency drives, lighting systems, motor controllers and various equipment. This involves both single and three-phased primary (up to 12.47KV) and secondary electrical distribution lines, circuits, and equipment at various voltages. Performs maintenance, installation, inspection, modifications, testing, troubleshooting and repairs on a wide variety of electrical, electronic, healthcare, and environmental management equipment to include but not limited to patient beds, stretchers, surgical tables, exam chairs and tables, and kitchen equipment. Maintains, troubleshoots, test and repairs boiler control systems in the heating plant. This involves various interconnected circuits that control the operation of boiler systems. Data and Communication Installation and Repair 20% The Incumbent installs, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains complete systems such as fire alarms, audio distribution systems, CCTV, data and communication systems, card access and intrusion alarm systems, and nurse call systems. Elevator Maintenance and Repair 5% The Incumbent performs troubleshooting, modifications, inspections, repairs, and preventive maintenance on both hydraulic and traction elevator systems. These systems are powered by one or two speed controls (120 to 480 volts, AC or DC) and may be single or duplex operation, containing a variety of interrelated electronics and electromechanical control circuits. High Voltage Installation, Maintenance and Repair 5% Performs switching, terminations, splicing, testing and repairs to high voltage cabling and equipment. Other Duties 10% Incumbent performs a wide range of tests/checks relating to electrical safety and equipment operation as outlined by the Joint Commission, OSHA, NEC, HAP, CAP, VA, and other pertinent standards and/or policies. Maintains, troubleshoots, and conducts repairs to automatic door operators, pneumatic tube delivery systems, and specialty medical and imaging equipment. Conducts training sessions designed to update, improve, or upgrade the knowledge and skills of others. Performs miscellaneous tasks of the Engineering Division in emergencies or as needed. Performs the installation of the above-mentioned equipment through rigorous planning, coordination and design while ensuring compliance with equipment specifications and applicable codes and laws. Performs preliminary Electrical design as required. incumbent installs, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains complete systems such as street light systems and emergency power systems. Performs maintenance, inspections, and repairs on a wide variety of electrical, medical, office, kitchen, and environmental management equipment. Incumbent receives little to no technical supervision. Must apply ingenuity, judgment and skill in planning and laying out work to meet a variety of unique requirements. Technical guides or diagrams may be incomplete or unavailable for troubleshooting or modification of work required. Incumbent often assists other shops in a variety of duties involving equipment installation, modification, troubleshooting, repair, and preventative maintenance. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Strenuous physical effort is required to dismantle and reassemble equipment. Frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Required to work from ladders, scaffolding, etc., where parts of systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places. Requires stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are commonly encountered for long periods. Hand dexterity is a critical requirement in completing most tasks. Employee/applicant must always be mentally alert and physically capable, as this work is demanding and hazardous. Works both inside and outside of the Medical Center and are required to work in cramped areas with low overheads. Position is subject to exposure to toxic refrigerants and to disclosure to airborne viruses, including COVID-19. Required to wear personal protective equipment while performing specific tasks.
