This position is to provide transportation to medical appointments, Public Housing Authority appointments, and housing searches for veterans and their primary support person within the Greater Los Angeles Veterans' Administration Supportive Housing program (VASH) and as appropriate, other units within the Community Engagement and Reintegration Service (CERS). This position will be split between the Ventura/Santa Barbara, California areas.
Duties
Serves as a driver within the HUD VASH program, may occasionally assist other homeless program departments.
Provides nonemergent, safe, and reliable transportation of eligible veterans and their primary support person.
Provides transportation to and from appointments within the Greater Los Angeles catchment area. This position will be located in the outlying areas, with the main focus in the Ventura/Santa Barbara, CA.
Interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people each day.
Provides the area supervisor with a daily log or list of veterans transported daily to include pick-up and drop off locations.
Responsible for ensuring CERS affiliated veterans and their primary support are transported to appointments and returned to their respective pick-up locations.
Provides preventive maintenance checks and services (such as checking fluid levels and air pressure in tires and cleaning and washing vehicle) for patient transport vehicles.
Safely drives a sedan, van, pickup, station wagon, panel or flatbed truck at highway speeds.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 11/01/2023.
Your background must demonstrate experience in the safe transportation of eligible passengers and cargo; operate and provide preventive maintenance for patient transport vehicles; operate multi-passenger, wheelchair equipped vans; how to manipulate the controls for starting-stopping, backing and driving the vehicle in all types of traffic and road conditions; familiarity with National Department of Transportation and interstate policies governing motor vehicle operations and be well versed in every aspect of patient safety during transport and must be able to recognize hazardous conditions and change routes to avoid them.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Must be in good physical condition and pass the physical examination for Motor Vehicle Operations as required by federal regulations. Physical and mental coordination and concentration is required for starting, stopping, driving, turning, and otherwise safe operation of a motor vehicle. Drivers at this grade level exerts moderate physical effort and must be able to assist patients into and out of the vehicle, which involves physical exertion and frequent stopping bending, and lifting of patients. Driver must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with no assistance. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs.
Drivers are required to be able to drive, handle, manipulate and control in a proper and safe manner gasoline, diesel, or electronic-powered wheeled vehicles to transport passengers.
Working Conditions: Vehicles are operated in all types of traffic and weather conditions over Federal, state and county roads to transport personnel, supplies, materials or equipment and tools in all traffic conditions with exposure to danger of serious accidents. The employee drives in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange system.
Vehicles are driven in restricted traffic environments on Government installations, over public roads and highways, or under cross-country conditions with a gross vehicle weight of 10,000 pounds.
