The health technician performs both clinical and administrative duties in support of the mission for the Department of Veteran Affairs, North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System, Diagnostic Imaging Service. The Diagnostic Imaging at NF/SGVHS includes the Radiology and Nuclear Medicine departments at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center and the Lake City VA Medical Center, Jacksonville, Tallahassee and the Villages Outpatient clinics.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to : Assists with coordination of work assignments to ensure a smooth workflow. Cleans and prepares the imaging equipment and room for the next exam/procedure. Prepares the patient for his/her upcoming exam/procedure. Sets up the imaging room to coincide with the examination being performed to include the use of proper sterile procedure when needed. Verifies two patient identifiers following Diagnostic Imaging Service policy and procedure. Registers and case edits patients pre/post exams. Checks inventory of supply stock and notifies MSD and/or modality technologist or Supervisor when a supply is needed. Restocks supplies, assuring that there are adequate standard and specialized supplies for upcoming procedures/exams, taking into consideration the availability and the time it takes to receive specialized supplies and notifies Supervisor if there is a critical need for procedure/exam. Checks equipment to be sure they are in working order. Assists modality supervisor, Biomed and vendor with coordination of preventive maintenance and/or repair to ensure operability of the equipment. Work Schedule: 8am-4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: Health Technician (Radiology)/PD059040 Physical Requirements: Physical demands are usually moderate: Lifting objects up to 40 pounds, moving specialized equipment and assisting patients from a gurney to a procedure or scan table. Occasionally, the technician assists with the moving of heavy equipment or large patients but this is done with the assistance of others to minimize the danger to the individual. Since many of the imaging procedures are performed using x-ray, the incumbent frequently works in and around x-ray producing equipment, requiring the use of a lead apron and other protective equipment. During a procedure, standing for extended periods while wearing a lead apron, is necessary. The incumbent must also work at a computer desk at times.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Knowledge of basic medical terminology, universal precautions in order to deal with isolation patients, infectious disease, patients in restraints, and patients who are unresponsive or uncooperative. Knowledge of all equipment and imaging procedures performed in each section of the department including General Radiology, Angiography/Interventional, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Mammography and Nuclear Medicine. Knowledge of the VISTA/CPRS hospital computer system in order to check exam orders and notes, schedule and/or register the patient when needed, closeout exams and make document any pertinent information related to the patients care or exam. Knowledge with workflow and scheduling of each individual modality. Ability to recognize and prioritize STAT or urgent procedures. Knowledge of PACS (Picture Archive Communication System). Ability to query and view patient images, print films or CD's if necessary, in compliance with department, hospital and HIPPA guidelines. Competent and knowledge on how to start intravenous lines (IV's). Knowledge of consent procedures for IV contrast agents, and recognition of contrast reactions and the appropriate response. Knowledge of blood lab values appropriate for each modality (Creatinine, eGFR). Knowledge of appropriate uses of contrast agents for various exams in each section. Knowledge of emergency procedures in case of patient reactions to contrast medium. Knowledge of basic CPR procedures and patient monitoring. Ability to take and report vitals. There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
