The primary purpose of this position, AIRCRAFT MECHANIC WG-8852-11, is to serve as a crew chief and technical authority, having custody of an assigned aircraft, with primary responsibility for performing, coordinating, and/or overseeing the maintenance and periodic inspections to the assigned aircraft.
Duties
Serve as crew chief of assigned T-38 aircraft, responsible for performing, coordinating, and/or overseeing maintenance on the aircraft.
Perform aircraft inspections including pre-flight, post-flight phase, and other scheduled and unscheduled inspections.
Diagnose and identify probable locations of malfunctions from the cockpit during engine run-up.
Initiate requests for unscheduled tools, equipment, and materials during preparation for flight.
Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work area.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-8800 AIRCRAFT OVERHAUL FAMILY. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
The screen out element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF THE POSITION WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires moderate to strenuous effort. Must climb, bend, stoop, crawl, and stand for prolonged periods on concrete or metal surfaces. Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh about 50 pounds with mechanical lifting devices or with assistance from other workers.
WORK CONDITIONS: Work is performed in hanger areas, outdoors, in parked aircraft, and sometimes in ha:t;ardous noise areas. Exposed to extremes in heat, cold, and inclement weather. Must work in confined areas and in awkward positions. Exposed to dirt, grease, and aircraft fluids, oil, hydraulic fluid, solvents, and hazardous fluids and gases such as Hydrazine and Halon. Subject to cuts, bruises, muscle strain, and injury from falls off scaffolds, ladders, and aircraft surfaces. May be exposed to intake suction and hot exhaust blast.
