The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center is seeking a highly qualified and motivated candidate for a Chemotherapy Pharmacy Technician position in Wichita, Kansas.
Work Schedule: Tour of Duty will be 8 hour shifts between the hours of 7:00am -10:00 pm on a rotating basis that may include weekends and holidays.

Duties
The Chemotherapy Pharmacy Technician is a highly specialized technician who, under the authority of the Chief, Pharmacy Service, Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations, and the Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor, is responsible to assure nonhazardous and hazardous compounded sterile preparations (CSPs) are correctly compounded, packaged, sealed, labeled (including assignment of appropriate
beyond-use date [BUD]), stored, and distributed.
This position requires that the Chemotherapy Pharmacy Technician demonstrates a concerned and critical attitude toward accuracy and strict adherence to USP and USP guidelines and IV Room Pharmacy policy and procedure, including quality assurance.
The Chemotherapy Pharmacy Technician also acts as a representative of the Pharmacy Service in a variety of Pharmacy related functions within the Healthcare System. The incumbent will be trained and expected to function and maintain competency in other areas of Pharmacy Service, as needed and assigned. In addition, and as deemed necessary by either the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations or the Pharmacy Supervisor(s), the incumbent may assist in other patient care areas, as needed, to maintain the consistency of overall Pharmacy services. Maintenance of current Pharmacy Technician certification is required.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Prepares chemotherapy agents and compounded sterile products (CSPs) in
compliance with USP and USP guidelines.
Undergoes initial IV Room Pharmacy training and competency assessment and annual
re-assessment and successfully maintains this requirement.
Obtains and utilizes knowledge of hazards of cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agents, to prepare, and deliver treatment with these agents and the equipment and supplies used in the
preparation of cytotoxic chemotherapy.
Uses advanced knowledge of specialized techniques and procedures required for
safely handling cytotoxic agents such as negative pressure technique, hazardous waste
disposal, and cytotoxic spill response.
Cleans the specified areas in the anteroom and cleanrooms, performing monthly
surface sampling in all ISO classified areas as required per policy and operational
standards.
Uses advanced knowledge of specialized techniques and procedures required for
safely handling cytotoxic agents such as negative pressure technique, hazardous waste
disposal, and cytotoxic spill response.
Assigns an appropriate beyond-use date (BUD).
Repackages liquids, tablets, capsules, etc., into specified quantities and various size
containers.
Ensures the correct use of tablet and capsule counting and packaging machines,
labeling machine to repackage a wide variety of pharmaceuticals from bulk stock
containers into smaller containers or unit dose forms, and to make and apply
appropriate labels.
Assembles and packages drugs and supplies for distribution.
Delivers medications to wards, out-patient clinics and procedural areas, etc.
Assists in Pharmacy Phone Triage Help Desk insuring timely and accurate information.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

7. Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures.
8. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyze data in VA information systems.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07.
Physical Requirements: Physical movements involve completion of routine pharmacy functions which include but are not limited to significant computer work/typing, prescription order entry and processing, contact of patients (both face to face and via phone). Certain tasks are repetitive in nature and require multiple steps performed in succession for success. The incumbent should be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds without significant difficulty. Incumbent must be able to stand or sit in one place for considerable time during completion of complex tasks. Complexity of mental processes involved is extensive, demanding, and challenging.
