This position is located within the Psychology Service of the Mental Health Service Line at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven, CT. The Secretary is the principal clerical or administrative support position in the office, operating independently of any other such position in the office. The primary purpose is to perform numerous tasks which are dissimilar in kind, but which have in common the purpose of assisting the work of one or more persons in an organization.

Duties

***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** The major duties include but are not limited to: Drafts correspondence, such as routine official correspondence, social and personal acknowledgments, congratulatory letters, acceptance letters and office reports; Determines nature of call or business of visitors; Responds to requests for information and/or develops one-of-a-kind reports covering organizational or technically oriented matters when information is available in office records and/or files; Assembles requested information or follows up to see that personnel submit requested information within the specified time; Secures for the supervisor documents, regulations, specific statistical and narrative program data or other matters of a technical nature from files of the organization or other organizations; Develops methods for automating administrative reports; Applies knowledge of desk-top publishing capabilities to enhance the presentation of the data; and, Performs all other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm. Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-7 level, you must meet the following: Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the federal service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Secretary, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes scheduling appointments; coordinating meetings, conferences and making travel arrangements; receiving visitors and telephone calls to the office; collecting, compiling and tracking data; preparing correspondence, reports, memoranda and other forms of written communication assuring format accuracy (e.g., grammar, punctuation, spelling, attachments, etc.); utilizing office automation software and maintaining files. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: AUDITING CLERICAL CUSTOMER SERVICE COMPUTER SKILLS IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work of the position is sedentary. Typically, the person in the position may sit comfortably to do the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items such as papers, books, small parts, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
