Duties

Joining Customs & Border Protection will allow you to use your expertise in telecommunication principles, concepts and methods to support telecommunication systems and services. This position starts at a salary of $112,015.00 (GS-13, Step 1) to $145,617.00 (GS-13, Step 10) with promotion potential to $145,617.00 (GS-13 Step 10). In this Telecommunications Specialist, you will serve as an expert consultant in telecommunications technology, processes, and installation procedures, with the capability to not only troubleshoot complex issues, but design systems to improve communications for end users nationwide. Typical work assignments include: Working with stakeholders concerning testing and evaluation of radio systems Assisting in completing assessments of shelters, towers, and locations for LMR enhancements Collecting information via site surveys, technical solution, engineering documentation and network diagrams Being accountable to Project Entry & Evaluation Process (PEEP) Team Lead for technical solutions and advising on complex radio issues and problems Working jointly with Tactical Communications Devices (TCD) Team Lead to assess issues with radio software features and equipment configurations

Experience: You qualify for the GS-13 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as: Installing, troubleshooting, repairing, redesigning, maintaining telecommunications systems, and managing radio frequency case submissions Resolving telecommunication equipment failure and unsatisfactory performance problems Configuring and maintaining telecommunication networks and applications, such as intrusion detection systems, land, mobile radio communication, and video surveillance Leading or participating as a technical expert in interagency groups for resolving problems in existing telecommunications systems and programs requiring innovative solutions Making recommendations and proposals on new and advance equipment and techniques based on performance capabilities, limitations, and cost You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience or substitution of education, if applicable, as described above and meet the basic requirement listed below. Basic Requirement: You must provide supporting documentation in your application to show you meet the basic requirement below. Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study - electrical or electronic engineering, mathematics, physics, public utilities, statistics, computer science, telecommunications management, information systems management, business administration, industrial management, or other fields related to the position to be filled. Other Education: Communications/electronics or automatic data processing training in technical institutes or business schools above the high school level or in Armed Forces schools that included advanced instruction in addition to basic courses, may be substituted for general experience on a month-for-month basis. OR Experience: Experience in evaluating, analyzing, developing, managing, or improving communications systems, procedures, and requirements that demonstrated knowledge of current developments and trends in communications concepts and technology.
