You will serve as a MARINE MACHINERY MECHANIC in the MECHANICAL SHOP, PRODUCTION RESOURCES DEPARTMENT of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will lay out, align, install and repair ships’ main propulsion machinery for steam turbine or diesel engines, main motor, reduction gears, bearings, shafts, propellers, rudders, and other components. You will defuel and refuel nuclear reactor plant as well as install and overhaul reactor support systems. You will perform on-site machining of casting and testing of parts on operating systems. You will be consulted on unique problems or in-progress design changes to ensure work meets specifications and accepted trade practices.

Requirements

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision: * Having working knowledge of mechanical principles, steam powered and internal combustion machinery, hydraulics, radiological principles, ordnance and electronic principles, machinery of metals, trade mathematics, and other principles. * Performing a full range of operations which include layout work, making templates, setting up and operating machines, such as portable boring bars, portable grinding machines, and refacing machines. * Performing precision hand work by matching and fitting parts by filing, scraping, hand reaming, tapping, grinding, and lapping. * Using arithmetic, geometry, and practical mathematics to complete daily task. * Working from blueprints, specifications, sketches, and other design and nuclear instructions.
