The Laborer/Tractor Operator position is aligned under the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Veterans Health Administration, (VHA), at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS), Engineering Service, Grounds Sections. The incumbent is required to perform a variety of exterior maintenance on the grounds of the facility. These activities are performed throughout the facility land area of approximately 114 acres and include areas having several.

Duties

Duties include but not limited to: Performs gardening activities such as planting, trimming, watering, spraying and applying pesticides, and fertilizing. Operates mowers, axes and or chain saws, gas and electric hedge trimmers, weed eaters and other powered equipment. Maintains the irrigation sprinkler systems up to and including all necessary work to replace broken or rusted lateral lines. Selects, measures, mixes, and applies fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides for the control of common plant diseases, plant insects, and weeds. Operates tractors, road-graders, forklifts, street sweepers, riding mowers sprayers and backhoes daily or as needed. Drives other station vehicles, such as 1 1/2 ton and one-ton trucks and sedans, both on and off Medical Center grounds. Operator is required to perform maintenance on tractors, backhoes, forklifts, lawnmower, sprayers and other powered equipment. Provides assistance to plumbers, carpenters, and other tradesmen in routine tasks not requiring journeyman level knowledge or skills. Mix concrete, or plaster, level out such materials as needed, assist in routing out sewer lines, breaks up pavement using jackhammers, digs trenches for irrigation that will be filled with pipe or conduit, transport materials to and from the job site and perform cleanup activities both during and following work. Physical Requirements: Incumbent exercises physical effort in the performance of duties such as frequent riding, walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, and daily working with weights ranging from 30 to 80 pounds. Operator is required to exert additional effort in operating equipment controls, making more frequent arm and leg movements. Must be in adequate physical condition. Working Conditions: Most of the work is done outside in extremes of heat and cold and adverse weather conditions. Frequently during summer months temperatures will be over a hundred degrees. When spraying pesticides, is required to wear protective clothing and respirators. Other protective clothing worn is steel toe boots, headgear and long sleeve shirts. Frequent possibilities of receiving injuries such as cuts, scrapes, bruises and sprains. Some exposure to contagious disease is possible in the handling of contaminated waste. Incumbent should not have serious allergies.
