Duties
As the senior law enforcement officer at Katmai, you will:
Provide oversight and leadership to the Visitor & Resource Protection Division of Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alagnak Wild and Scenic River and Aniakchak National Preserve, a program that includes law enforcement, emergency services, aviation program, search and rescue, wilderness and backcountry operations and management, special park uses, fee program management, commercial services and other visitor and resource protection duties.
Serve on the park's Management Team, providing input and advice to the Superintendent on a range of divisional and park goals and strategic priorities and will be working in cooperation with the Alaska Regional Office (AKRO) and the Washington DC Support Office (WASO).
Perform a wide range of supervisory functions including work planning, scheduling and prioritizing, assigning and reviewing work, training, awards and recognition, performance appraisals, safety, and recruiting.
Represent the NPS and the park on multi-agency, DOI and NPS workgroups and committees to achieve program goals.
Physical Demands: A variety of physical demands occur in this position. Work includes long periods
standing, hiking and climbing in uneven, steep, rough, slippery and rugged terrain. Strenuous exertion is frequently required in law enforcement, firefighting, search and rescue and emergency medical situations. Lifting or carrying equipment weighing over 50 pounds, such as search and rescue equipment is required. The work may require the pursuit and physical apprehension of dangerous suspects. Incumbent is required to work outside in all types of weather conditions. There may be many days of primarily
sedentary work in an office, but the incumbent may be required at very short notice to participate in strenuous physical activity.
There is a physical; mental and emotional high-stress component to the incumbent's work assignments. This position comes under the scope and requirements of the park's Health and Fitness program. Physical requirements for law enforcement and emergency services as specified in RM-57 must be met on a regular basis and incumbent must keep self drugfree.
Working Conditions: The majority of the time is spent in an office environment. However, field inspections, evaluations, consultations and emergency situations frequently involve outdoor work. Incumbent may be subjected to extreme arctic weather including cold (to -40 F), snow, high winds, high altitudes, blizzards, rain and dust. The work may be preformed at various hours of the day and night for prolonged periods of time during emergency situations. The incumbent is frequently exposed to high.crisk and potentially dangerous situations in law enforcement and emergency operations requiring adherence to specific safety procedures and other precautions. Long periods of surveillance work mat be
required in cramped or unpleasant locations and under stressful conditions. Shift work is
often required. Travel often occurs in government aircraft, including small fixed wing and helicopters or
in various forms of float and motor-powered vessels, which may affect the employee's private life insurance policies. Exposure to Law enforcement and other dangerous persons, animals, substances and potential exposure to infectious diseases are standard expectations of daily work. Incumbent may be subject to hazards such as intense concentrations of insects, bears, and other dangerous or noxious pests.
Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Examples of specialized experience include: managing resource and visitor protection programs including law enforcement,aviation, search and rescue, emergency medical services, and wildland firefighting; evaluating law enforcement program activities based on funding to determine objectives, amount and location of work, as well as type of resources needed for the program; interpreting regulations and policy directives related to law enforcement and natural resource protection; reviewing law enforcement case reports to ensure compliance with policy, mutual aid agreements, cooperative agreements and memoranda of understanding; investigating criminal activity; supervising a workforce engaged in resource and visitor protection and serving as a senior advisor to management. .
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Law Enforcement Commission: This position requires applicants to possess, previously held (within the past three years), or be able to possess by entrance on duty 10/30/2023 a valid Type I level National Park Service (NPS) Law Enforcement Commission. If you are currently attending FLETC, please notate your graduation date on your resume.
This is a secondary-administrative law enforcement position under the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S. C. 8336 (c) (CSRS) and 5 U. S. C. 8412 (d) (FERS). PLEASE NOTE: Applicants may meet qualification requirements, but may not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If such an applicant is selected, they will be placed in the regular retirement system. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under CSRS, an employee must transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position. To be eligible for Secondary retirement coverage under FERS, an employee must: 1) transfer directly (without a break in service exceeding 3 days) from a primary position to a secondary position, AND 2) complete 3 years of service in a primary rigorous position including any such service during which no FERS deductions were withheld, AND 3) must be continuously employed in a secondary position(s) since moving from a primary rigorous position, except for any break in employment from a secondary position that began with involuntary separation (not for cause).

- The people selected for these positions must be determined physically fit by an authorized physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties, pass a medical examination, and pass the Physical Efficiency Battery (PEB). The PEB is a fitness test consisting of five different components: 1) agility run - measures the ability to get up from the ground and sprint while changing directions; 2) bench press - measures upper body strength for one repetition; 3) 1.5 mile run - measures cardio/respiratory fitness; 4) sit and reach - measures flexibility in the lower back, legs and shoulders; and 5) body composition - measures body fat. Selectees will be tested in all five components, and must pass the agility run, bench press and 1.5 mile run in the 25th percentile.
