This position serves as a Medical Records Technician located in the Health Information Management Department at the Fort Peck Service Unit in Poplar, Montana. This position reports to the Medical Records Administrator or designee.

Duties

Work with computerized information systems including an electronic health record, encoding software, the internet, and other software applications. Responsible for maintaining medical records in accordance with Indian Health Service, State and local regulations. Scans documents into the electronic health record. Performs duties related to the receipt, scanning, indexing, and filing of non-electronic medical and administrative information/forms. Reviews, analyzes, and performs technical evaluation of medical records for compliance, completeness, and accuracy.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the at least the GS-04 grade level OR four (4) years of education above high school. GS-6: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the at least the GS-05 grade level. GS-7: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the at least the GS-06 grade level. NOTE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for all grade levels and positions for which both education and experience are acceptable. Specialized ExperienceExperience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Examples of Specialized Experience: GS-5: Assist providers in completion of their health record documentation and assist coders; Scan documents into the electronic health record; File and purge inactive charts. GS-6: Assist providers in completion of their health record documentation and assist coders; Scan documents into the electronic health record; File and purge inactive charts; Maintain paper and electronic medical records according to policy and regulations; Code medical records for various medical and clinical processes such as disease, illness or injury. GS-7: Assist providers in completion of their health record documentation and assist coders; Scan documents into the electronic health record; File and purge inactive charts; Maintain paper and electronic medical records according to policy and regulations; Code medical records for various medical and clinical processes such as disease, illness or injury; Review medical records for compliance with established third party reimbursement agencies special screening criteria, inconsistencies or discrepancies; Organize and check medical records for completeness, accuracy and compliance with regulatory requirements; Code complex clinical data into an automated patient management care Component system; Assist in providing on-going training needs as system modifications occur and coding systems change. Time In Grade Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP). You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.
