The Lead Compounding Sterile Products Pharmacy Technician reports to the Inpatient Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, or designee, and will work closely with the Facility Program Manager (IV/QA) Pharmacist. The incumbent shall oversee compliance with regulatory standards, VHA regulations, medical center policies, pharmacy services policies, and pharmacy standard operating procedures.

Duties

Assists develop and implement daily workflow procedures to ensure compliance with USP General Chapters , and as well as other applicable regulatory standards and best practice. Assists develop and implement cleaning procedures based on USP General Chapters , and . This includes investigating available cleaners, the cleaning supplies used, and ensuring their proper use according to manufacturer recommendations. Assists develop and implement garbing procedures based on USP General Chapters , and . This includes investigating available garb supplies and ensuring their proper use. Review Medical Center Policies, Pharmacy Services Policies, and Pharmacy Standard Operating Procedures for compliance with USP General Chapters , and as well as other applicable regulatory standards and best practices. The incumbent will assist in all inpatient pharmacy areas when needed whichincludes, but not limited to: Cart fill; Medication Cart Delivery; Automated Omnicell Cabinet Restocking; Internal/External Inspections. Demonstrates and maintain proficiency in core competencies for compounding sterile products as required by USP General Chapters , and as well as Pharmacy Services Policies and Standard Operating Procedures. Accurately prepare hazardous and non-hazardous CSPs, including chemotherapy, in compliance with the principles and standards of USP General Chapters , and , National policy, and local policy. Assists the Facility Program Manager (IV/QA) Pharmacist in developing, administering, and manage written training program, all required competencies related to sterile products, and oversee the training of compounded sterile products, including but not limited to; Gloved Fingertip Testing (GFT); Media Fill Test (MFT); Aseptic Technique; Personal Hygiene, Hand Washing, and Garbing; Decontaminating, Cleaning, and Disinfecting Procedures; Hazardous Medication Manipulation Technique; Didactic and Calculations Exams. Accurately document and maintain competency records as required by USP General Chapters , and . Interpret monitoring results and develop action plans to address identified deficiencies. Continually monitor daily operations and procedures for efficiency and compliance regarding compounded sterile products. Complete area inspections in all USP sterile compounding areas. Review and manage inventory levels of hazardous and non-hazardous intravenous medications, including anticipatory compounded products, solutions for compounding, and medications for compounding. Review and manage inventory levels of all sterile compounding supplies, cleaning supplies, and garb supplies. Maintain proper storage of medication inventory and CSPs taking into consideration temperature, light sensitivity, and hazardous or non-hazardous classification. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent OR at least 3 month experience. Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above. English Language Proficiency: Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, Paragraph 5a, this part (Handbook 5005) Grade Determinations: GS-7- In order to qualify for the Specialized Pharmacy Technician-Inpatient at the GS-7 level, you must have the following. 1. Experience: One year of experience at the next lower (GS-6) grade level and must full meet the GS-6 KSAs. GS-6 KSA experience includes; Ability to solve problems and make recommendations, e.g. troubleshoot operation problems and refer for appropriate action. Knowledge of the operation and care of automated equipment Knowledge of, and ability to follow, written instructions for compounding with aseptic technique for hazardous materials such as oncology agents. Knowledge, and ability to perform, compounding with aseptic technique for routine sterile products. Knowledge of policies and procedures for inventory management in specialized areas such as emergency carts Knowledge of the computerized prescription process demonstrated by the ability to input prescriptions and medication orders. 2. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs): In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following technical KSAs and the potential to acquire the assignment specific KSA designated by the Asterisk (*): *Ability to evaluate and analyze workflow and coordinate work activities. Ability to independently gather, evaluate, and analyze data to generate reports and/or for other projects/statistical purposes. Knowledge of pharmacy policies and procedures sufficient to train and orient new employees and other staff Comprehensive knowledge of the operation and care of specialized pharmaceutical equipment. Comprehensive knowledge of the procurement and formulary process Comprehensive knowledge of investigational drug policies and procedures Comprehensive knowledge of controlled substance policies and procedures, and the ability to identify and investigate discrepancies in these policies and procedures. Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to, analyzed data in VA information systems. 3. Certification: PTCB Certification required at this grade level. Preferred Experience: Knowledge and experience with hazardous drug handling. References: Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G28.The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-7. Physical Requirements: This job requires physical/mental dexterity, mental/emotional stability, ability to bed, stoop, lift weight of approximately 40 pounds, and much standing and walking.
