The incumbent is a journeyman pipefitter assigned to the Plumbing Shop at the VAMC, West Palm Beach, Florida. The Pipefitter is subject to callback for any emergency conditions which may arise outside of their regular tour of duty. They are responsible for the installation, modification, maintenance, and repair of new and existing systems of water, steam, vacuum, gas systems, medical gas systems and testing of medical gas outlets to insure patient safety.
Duties
Major duties include but are not limited to:
Performs preventive maintenance, repairs, replaces, services, installs, modifies, fabricates, cleans, adjusts, tests, lubricates, troubleshoots, building service and portable equipment requiring water, steam, gas, or air connections.
Performs preventive maintenance inspections as indicated on scheduled preventive maintenance procedures and maintenance management policies and work orders to include flowing of sprinkler flow valves and switches.
Eliminates defects or malfunctions, like leaks by repacking valves, replacing faulty fittings or sections of pipe, by joining, sealing, and testing systems and equipment for proper pressures, leak-free joints and operation.
Cuts, assembles, welds or makes repairs to metal counters, carts, cabinets, etc., fabricated from stainless steel or other ferrous or non-ferrous materials.
Plans and lays out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment.
Performs preventive maintenance, repairs, replaces, services, installs, modifies, fabricates, cleans, adjusts, test, lubricates, troubleshoots, building service and portable equipment requiring water, steam, gas, or air connections.
Performs investigation of defects or malfunctions of steam systems, water systems, and gas systems including piping and all auxiliary equipment.
Troubleshoots, repairs or replaces segments of air, gas, steam, water, sewer, and medical gas systems.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: Must work on ladders from scaffolding or in trenches and manholes when installing and maintaining equipment or services. Occasionally works on high ceilings, holding heavy power tools overhead or at arm's length. At other times must work sitting, kneeling, stoop, bend or in an awkward position when working on equipment or services. The incumbent must be able to identify colors as established by the American Standards Association for identification of piping systems, hazardous liquids and gases and mechanical equipment. The incumbent will frequently handle, lift, carry, and setup parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. May occasionally be required to lift weight up to 70 pounds.
Working Conditions: The incumbent is subject to all kinds of weather, dust, bad smelling fumes, noise and dampness, as is exposed to hazards involving work at heights, in trenches or manholes, falling material, power equipment, steam, hot water, cramp quarters, etc. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections.
