About the Position: Available legal assistance counseling includes advise on most areas of civil law including general consumer law issues, contract disputes, landlord/tenant disputes, contract review, creditor problems, nonsupport, motor vehicle laws, merchant scams, immigration, wills, powers of attorney, bankruptcy and indebtedness, separation/divorce, notarizations, and taxation.

Duties

Consults with state, county, township, and municipal authorities to include taxing authorities, court personnel, and state attorney generals. Provides paralegal support to assigned attorney(s). Prepares legal documents for clients (powers of attorney, affidavits, promissory notes), and legal information sheets. Researches, examines, and evaluates laws of various jurisdictions on various topics Performs extensive and thorough legal research into a wide variety of statutes, laws, decisions, and military regulations that may be applicable to the legal matter at hand May be called upon to analyze the applicability and relevance of findings and prepare a summary of the pertinent points of law involved Independently conducts legal research and writes legal reviews on documents/files, as assigned; identifies applicable laws, regulations or other precedent as necessary and drafts responses for signature of the action attorney Independently maintains legal assistance resources and publications Completes conflict of interest analysis to ascertain if clients need to be referred to another military legal assistance office Serves as legal assistance victim witness liaison to domestic violence victims Provides notary services. Tort claims intake and providing assistance to personal property loss claimants seeking recovery against moving companies

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position requires the incumbent to obtain a Maryland Notary License within 6 months of employment and maintain such license during the remainder of employment.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Assisting with providing paralegal support to attorneys; (2) Assisting in conducting legal research and writing legal reviews, and (3) Assisting with reviewing legal forms or records for technical accuracy. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07) OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D. in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Customer ServiceInformation ManagementLegal, Government and JurisprudenceTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-???????07).
