As a Health Technician, you will provide clinical and administrative support in a wide variety of patient care and work related activities in Nursing/Ambulatory Care Service which includes the Emergency Department and ICU. The Emergency Department has over 2 openings at each Gainesville and Lake City location. The ICU position is located at the Lake City VA Medical Center of the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System.
Duties
This position serves as a Health Technician in the Emergency Department.
Communicates with patients/families/visitors in a courteous, thoughtful, and caring manner when delivering patient care.
Assist with patient transport under direction of provider/ RN.
Prepares and assists patient and treatment area for specific procedures. Assists with minor surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. This includes splinting and Immobilization under direction of provider/RN.
Performs phlebotomy under direction of Provider/ RN and execute orders. Discontinues peripheral IV catheters/heparin lock removal and documents condition of site. Performs select treatments and procedures using aseptic technique to assist with treatment plan. Dressing application, lab specimen collection, placement of urinary catheters.
Accurately takes and records vital signs and reports any deviations from normal. Establish cardiac monitoring Preforms 12 lead EKG under direction of provider/RN. Assists RN in routine patient care activities by turning and position patients while maintains proper body alignment.
Recognizes apparent changes in patient's physical or psychosocial condition and reports findings to provider/RN. Anticipates and recognizes the patient's psychological illness from onset to recovery, or death, and uses appropriate opportunities to interact in a therapeutic manner. Recognizes and provides maximal physical, safety, and emotional security for the patient by taking appropriate action, discussing with the nurse and providing the input to the patient care plan.
Work Schedule: 7:30AM-8:00PM, 10:00AM-10:30PM, rotating weekends
Part time schedule is also available and hours will be determined

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/25/2023.
Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-6 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-5. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
You must meet the Individual Occupational Requirement:: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes, but are not limited to: Obtaining and documenting patient vital signs blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, weight, oxygen saturation and postural vital signs; Arranging (suction, oxygen equipment, etc.,) and passing medical instruments and materials to the provider; Providing emotional support to the patients; Cleaning equipment and rooms between procedures; Performing health care procedures such as 12 lead EKGs, collection of specimens (venipuncture to obtain serum blood samples, finger stick for blood glucose, etc.), applying dressings, initiating cardiac monitoring correctly and admitting/discharging patients from monitoring systems and printing rhythm strips and adjusting simple supportive equipment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements: The work is involves considerable walking and standing (up to eight hours/day), pushing, pulling, bending, and heavy lifting (45 pounds or more). Incumbent accepts assignments on any tour of duty and in whatever area services is required.
