Duties
The employee will serve as a Park Ranger for visitor service operations, reporting directly to the Supervisory Park Ranger, at Lincoln Home National Historic Site (LIHO). Lincoln Home has over 30 structures, including visitor service facilities, the historic 1860 era Lincoln Home, and 13 other historic houses. The employee will work a fast-paced, complex, front line interpretive operation that includes working the visitor center operation, a Lincoln Home public tour schedule and ticket system, and work in the fee program, as well as educational and outreach programs. The employee will staff the Visitor Center information desk, collect fees, sell America the Beautiful passes, and present Lincoln Home tours to diverse audiences. In addition, the employee will research, plan, and develop Lincoln Home tours and other interpretive programs, primarily about 19th century American history, such as frontier development, the sectional crisis, and the life and Presidency of Abraham Lincoln. The employee will stand for long periods of time and will work with large crowds of visitors in potentially stressful situations.
Area Information: Lincoln Home National Historic Site is located in downtown Springfield, Illinois. Springfield (population of 111,000) is the state capitol and is located approximately 200 miles south of Chicago and 100 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri. Amenities are typical of a Midwestern city and include a wide variety of educational and cultural opportunities, as well as professional, commercial and health services. The climate is cold in the winter and hot and humid in summer. Government housing is not available but a variety of housing options are available for rent or purchase in the local area. Housing costs are some of the lowest in the country. Physical Demands: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, walking up and down steep sets of stairs, standing for long periods of time, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
Working Conditions: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-10/20/2023-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, interpretation, education, public speaking, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park related work. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; environmental educator or teacher; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations; or other similar work. You must include hours per week worked on your resume.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelors degree with 24 semester hours of coursework in a major study in a related field. (Related fields of study include natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, communications, education, English/writing, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources). You must include transcripts.

Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, 6 months of the specialized experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and 2 years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework as specified above (50% of the related coursework required) would be qualifying. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include hours per week worked on your resume. You must include transcripts.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
