The purpose of these positions are to serve as a Pharmacy Resident training position performing a variety of developmental assignments intended to increase or further the knowledge, skills, and abilities in the incumbent's area of expertise. Positions report to their respective Area Pharmacy Resident Coordinator.

Duties

The pharmacy residency is an organized, directed, postgraduate training in a defined area of pharmacy practice. The graduate will have refined skills in drug therapy management, disease state management, patient consultation, interviewing techniques, laboratory test interpretation and physical assessment. The graduate will be able to communicate and function effectively with other health care professionals in the IHS and understand their roles and those of the organization. Duties: Performs clinical assignments of moderate scope and complexity under general supervision. Applies familiarity with and use of a number of standard principles, methods, and practices as necessary in order to adapt practices and techniques to specific situations, adjusts and correlates data; recognize discrepancies and deviations in Results, and follows an operation through of series of related detailed steps and/or processes. Carries out clinical pharmacy functions of drug selection, compounding, and dispensing. Provides information and consultative advice to the prescribing doctor on contraindications and side effects of drugs. Participates in inter- and intra- departmental hospital training programs for such groups as physicians, nurses, and pharmacists.

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. The Hiring Manager/Selecting Official may elect to utilize an available flexibility wherein applicants who are currently enrolled and expected to complete the required education and obtain the required licensure/certification/registration with 9 month(s) of applying, may be deemed tentatively qualified. BASIC REQUIREMENT(S): Education: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Licensure: All applicants must have passed the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX) and the Multistate Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE). Applicants also must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Those who will be meeting the Education and Licensure requirement within the 9-month period will be tentatively qualified and referred. If selected, you will be required to provide Official Transcript and Valid Pharmacy License before appointment. In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Applicant's qualifications background must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary to perform the work of the position. Pharmacy work requires knowledge of the use, clinical effects, and composition of medications, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties. Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Dispensing medications prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and providing information to health practitioners and patients about proper usage of medications and side effects Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations Performing administrative, consultative, or staff advisory work for a medical facility's pharmacy program Planning, monitoring and evaluating medication programs or regimens Establishing medication-handling procedures for the storage and preservation of medications Researching medical literature and/or clinical medication information to provide accurate responses to inquiries Maintaining all medication records required by law Medical Requirements: Applicants must be able to distinguish basic colors. You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Education

Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D., Pharm.D., or equivalent doctoral degree.
