Duties
This position will allow you to use your expertise in performing and overseeing automotive repair and maintenance. Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen the Department's ability to perform homeland security functions by analyzing and refining existing work methods and developing new methods and procedures. This position starts at a salary of $34.77 (WS-10, Step 1) to $40.60 (WS-10, Step 5) with promotion potential to $40.60 (WS-10 Step 5).
This position will allow you to use and share your expertise in automotive repair and maintenance. Your major duties will include:
Planning, assigning, and directing work for a sector vehicle maintenance unit
Scheduling and approving leave, setting performance requirements, making performance appraisals, planning and initiating training, and maintaining production reports and records
Supervising everyday equipment maintenance and heavy equipment operation
Troubleshooting, repairing and/or overhauling major automotive components
Establishing yearly priorities and goals relating to the utilization and operation of all Agency equipment used for Border Patrol operations
Qualifications
Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.
To minimally qualify for the WS-10 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element: Ability to Lead or Supervise. To meet the screen out element(s), you should haveexperience performing the following duties:
troubleshooting and repairing a variety of automotive systems such as engines, transmission and gear reduction systems, transaxles, drive line and rear axle assemblies, electrical and electronic systems, fuel injection systems, emission control systems, braking systems, hydraulic and other assemblies.
interpreting and applying manufacturer's repair manuals, schematics, diagnostic codes and safety manuals sufficient to accomplish these tasks and be familiar with all tools, equipment, and materials used by automotive mechanics
Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas:
General knowledge of agency operations and activities supported by the fleet
Knowledge of standard and special purpose vehicles and equipment, specifications, capabilities and operating characteristics.
Knowledge of automotive repair and maintenance requirements
Ability to manage all aspects of vehicle repair including inventory control, job orders, and needs assessments
Ability to deal effectively with state/local government and contractors

You must:
Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and
Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 10/20/2023.

Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
