This position serves as a Pipefitter within the Facility Management Service Center of the VA Medical Center located in North Little Rock, AR.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Installing, modifying and repairing new and existing utility, supply and disposal systems, high pressure piping, steam heating, steam generation, steam distribution, flash and expansion tanks, condensate pumps, condensate lines, vacuum, oxygen and air systems, circulating pumps, potable water booster pumps, underground storage reservoirs, and elevated water storage tanks, radiators, sewage disposal, various drainage systems, water, oil, gas distribution systems, water closets, sinks, lavatories, tubs, showers, fire hydrants, and fire protection systems and related equipment. Installing and repairing items such as valves, fittings, traps, fixtures, drains, etc. Working from building plans, blueprints and sketches, and oral orders to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure, reductions, expansions, slope, and proper operation of various piping systems and equipment. Setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, tapping main lines under pressure, placing hangers for proper pitch and elevation and determining and installing such things as risers, flexible branches, expansion joints, pumps, gauges, thermometers, pressure regulators, valves, strainers, traps, and unions needed for proper operation of these systems. Placing the equipment at the proper level and points in the system, and joining, sealing and testing systems and equipment for proper pressure, leak-free joints and operation. Maintaining therapeutic swimming pool equipment such as heating and proper circulating of the water. Working knowledge of high pressure steam and equipment to control the steam, the distribution piping and return systems. Thorough knowledge of automatic fire water systems and devices incorporated in the sprinkler systems. Using many tools of the journeyman trade such as various hand tools, gas and electric welding and soldering, pipe threaders and cutters, all types of sewer cleaning machines and shop equipment. Performing other duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 2:00pm to 10:30pm, schedule subject to change based on the needs of the agency. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Makes repairs and installs from ladders, scaffolding, under buildings, dark places, manholes and above ceilings and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. This requires the employee to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently handles, lifts, carries and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds or more. The work is performed inside and outside and is subject to be dirty, dusty and greasy. Sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad, smelly places, outside in cold and hot weather. Frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns and infections. Works with high, medium and low pressure steam, hot water, contaminated sewage and potential electrical hazards. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
