Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below before beginning work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:GG-05• Bachelors degree in or related to an Engineering or Physical Science discipline with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) below 2.95 (transcript required).
GG-07• Bachelors degree in or related to an Engineering or Physical Science discipline with a cumulative GPA of 2.95 or higher (transcript required); OR• Bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA below 2.95 and one year of full-time post degree professional work experience in or related to Engineering or Physical Science that demonstrates the application of engineering or physical science principles.
GG-09• Masters degree in or related to an Engineering or Physical Science discipline (transcript required); OR• Bachelor's degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.95 or higher and one year of full-time post degree professional work experience in or related to Engineering or Physical Science that demonstrates the application of engineering or physical science principles.
Candidates may qualify for a higher grade level based on a combination of Education and Experience if that experience includes one year of full-time post-degree professional experience at the next lower grade level, or equivalent, in an engineering or science occupation or a closely related occupation performing similar duties that demonstrate the application of engineering or physical science principles. This experience must be in the resume and would have to be evaluated to determine if it is at the appropriate grade level in the normal line of progression.
Education
The position has an education requirement.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR 0801 SERIES
- Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics. OR
- Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.
For more information on sufficient evidence of such please refer to OPM’s standard for GENERAL ENGINEERING SERIES
BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR 1301 SERIES
- Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR
- Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience, or additional education.
For more information on sufficient evidence of such please refer to OPM’s standard for PHYSICAL SCIENCE SERIES
You must provide a copy of your "Unofficial" transcripts by the closing date of the vacancy announcement that contains the name of the educational institution, academic major, course titles, number of credits, grades, cumulative GPA, courses currently in progress (if applicable), date of completion, and degree conferral (if degree is completed). If you fail to submit transcripts with your application by the closing date, you will be considered ineligible and will no longer be considered. "Official" transcripts will be required at a later date.
You must meet OPM’s basic education and professional knowledge requirements that apply to Federal engineering and sciences positions for the grade levels to which you are applying. This knowledge is met by having a bachelor's or higher degree in a relevant professional engineering/science discipline from a school of engineering with at least one engineering curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) (or by documenting how you meet the minimum OPM qualification standards for the 800 Occupational Series or 1301 Occupational Series). Degrees in Engineering Technology are generally not considered qualifying for this position.
Applicants can verify accreditation at the following website: https://www.ed.gov/accreditation.
If you are using foreign education to meet qualification requirements, you must send a Certificate of Foreign Equivalency with your transcript in order to receive credit for that education.
