The Medical Instrument Technician - Gastroenterology (MIT-GI) is a member of the Endoscopy/GI Laboratory and reports to Nursing Service. The MIT-GI provides assistance to the physician, nurse manager, registered nurse, and other team members during diagnostic examinations or medical treatment procedures as part of the diagnosis and treatment of patients. The work is performed in the Endoscopy Suite/ Gastroenterology Laboratory.

Duties

The MIT-GI performs work in the Endoscopy Suite/Gastroenterology Laboratory. The MIT functions as a primary person responsible for assisting the endoscopists, handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during GI procedures, including setting up equipment, assisting with biopsy procurement, snare polypectomy, esophageal/pyloric/colonic dilation, variceal banding, injection and/or electrocautery for treatment of bleeding. Also, assists with post procedure equipment care, log and transport of lab and pathology specimens. Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex GI and pulmonary procedure set-ups for procedural rooms for the performance of GI/pulmonary procedures. Plan and discusses each procedure with the other GI procedure team members and ensures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the GI procedure. Observes and responds promptly to each stage of the GI procedures and anticipates the needs of the physician and/or registered nurse by maintaining a high level of concentration for extended periods of time. Recognizes potentially hazardous situations and takes corrective action. Maintains, evaluates, troubleshoots, and performs on site adjustments for all technical equipment and accessories. Prepares patients for procedures. Assists the physician and/or registered nurse with instrumentation necessary to perform the required procedure and treatment. Responsible for ensuring that the procedure room is stocked of all specialized GI accessories. Work Schedule: Day Shift 8:00 am-4:30 pm or 9:00 am to 5:30 pm. Preferred Experience: Endoscopy experience and 5 years or more of SPS experience is preferred but not required. Certification: BCLS (Basic Cardiac Life Support) certification is desirable, but not required. BASIC REQUIREMENTS: The following are the basic requirements and qualifications for this position: United States Citizenship English Language Proficiency Grade Determination: Applicants must meet one of the Grade Determinations: GS-6 Experience: Must have at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-5) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. This includes Aiding staff with procedures which are routine and standardized in nature; explaining the procedures to the patient to secure confidence and cooperation; position patients for procedures; restock linen and consumable supplies; set-up, clean and ensure proper performance of the endoscopic equipment; prepare procedure rooms for turn-over; and logs procedure and reprocessing data. In addition, you must demonstrate the following KSAs: (1) Ability to set up endoscopy equipment, ensuring endoscopes and ancillary equipment functions properly. (2) Ability to aid physician with standard and routine procedures such as colonoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). (3) Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy in order to assist practitioner with routine standardized gastroenterology procedures. (4) Ability to interact with patients explaining procedures and positioning the patient for the procedure, recognizing disabilities or impaired mobility and assisting the patient as necessary. (5) Ability to reprocess and maintain specialty critical reusable medical equipment (RME), following approved standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and universal precautions. (6) Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data adhering to patient privacy and information security policies. (7) Ability to manually clean and disinfect non-critical reusable equipment and surfaces, dispose of one-time-use equipment and trash per facility policy, and restock supplies such as linens, suction equipment, and cleaning products. GS-7 Experience: Must have at least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS-6) which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the position to be filled. This would be experience which provided knowledge of proper performance of endoscopic equipment and procedures. This includes: Assisting staff with complex specialized procedures such as ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS); proficient with GI endoscopic equipment and ensure proper performance; selects alternate equipment or adjusts equipment settings to accommodate patient needs and produce high quality technique; collects, processes, and labels all specimens; trains other technicians in basic endoscopic procedures; work in and outside the GI unit offering technician support during emergent and on-call endoscopic cases; assists the nurse in patient care duties such as obtaining vital signs, dressing and documenting pertinent information in the patient's records; and inventory and maintain par levels of specialty equipment for the endoscopy unit. In addition, you must demonstrate the following KSAs: (1) Knowledge of endoscopic equipment and use in basic and complex endoscopic procedures. (2) Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to the GI system, with ability to recognize and report obvious abnormalities during procedures. (3) Ability to assist physician with specialized and complex procedures. (4) Knowledge of universal precautions and disinfection techniques and ability to follow SOPs to clean reusable medical equipment (RME). (5) Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service skills and interpersonal skills with all healthcare professionals to ensure quality and continuity of care. (6) Ability to use basic computer systems and programs to record patient and endoscopic data, adhering to patient privacy and information security policies. (7) Ability to deliver patient care, including vital sign measurements and medication administration.
